Hi

I just made a booking on a Qantas flight and I was told that I needed to change my luggage as the allowable weight is 23Kg per bad (down from 32Kg)

I however checked on the web, and it states the 3/4/2009.

Is this correct advice or not that was given to me by an operator?

Thanks

Samantha

I saw that recently, but it starts on the 3/4/2009 on one url

now if I click the link on the pdf that I got with my ticket is states that I can carry 2 x 32kg (being a Gold FF)

However, I was told today that I am only allowed 23kg max. She argued and said that is because my ticket was issued after the "soft" introduction of the new scheme.

Now form that url above

Your allowed x amount of pieces provided that the max wieght doesnt exceed 32kg? (with the 10kg extra for gold ff) is my understanding. I have noticed that there is nothing said about pre-purchasing the excess wieght at a cheaper price...

as quoted from that url
"Silver and Gold Frequent Flyer members continue to receive an additional 10kg (22lb) allowance or one extra piece on the USA route."

So in some instances, you would be better off getting 2 or 3 seats depending on the luggage and the price of the ticket

and in the fine print
**Effective 3 April 2009 Domestic Checked Baggage additional collection charges over 23kg (50lb) will increase to A$10 per kg

Regards

Samantha

The new weight limit has started (beginning of March), just the new fee has not (it is changing from $8 per kilo over 23kg, to $10 per kilo).

In any case, buying a ticket now, for travel post April 3, you will be completely under the new weight limits/excess charges.

Despite the new changes, they haven't quite ironed out all the inconsistencies yet. For example, the printed sheet with the itinerary/e-ticket (Australian, properly formatted version) still shows the old weight allowances.

In addition, if you click on the weight allowance when reviewing your flights, you get a pop-up explaining the details. In the bottom half of that dialog box, it still shows that status pax + QC get extra allowances on domestic via the piece system, not by weight.

any ticket issued after 1/12/08 has the new rules applied to it

For travel to USA, it is now 2x23 rather 2x32 allowance for economy/Premium economy . Busines/1st remains at 2x32Kg

For all other travel, including Domestic Australian travel, the allowance is 23Kg TOTAL, not per bag

A side issue!

Do golf clubs come under this policy and just get added to your normal luggage weight or is sporting equipment treated differently?

From the Qantas site...

Australian Domestic

A golf set can be included in the checked baggage allowance. If the golf set and your checked baggage exceed the free baggage piece allowance, additional baggage rates will be charged.

International Weight System
When the combined weight of one golf set and checked baggage exceeds the free baggage weight allowance, you will be charged the rate equal to 6kg (14lb) of additional baggage, or normal rates for additional baggage - whichever is less. Golfing equipment in excess of 15kg (33lb) will be charged at the normal additional baggage rates.

Thanks Dave....my golf set must be lighter than I thought.
I was surprised at how light my golf set was when I bought it in September. The golf set, light golf stand bag and umbrella are ~9 kilos. Took the golf set to Melbourne recently and it was a little over 10 kilos as I had accumulated some golf balls and other junk in there recently....
