One thing to remember though that flyer flyer membership aside, a lot of airlines in the US offer upgrades to First Class for a fraction of the cost of the full first class airfare.

If you web check the day prior, somewhere during the checkin process it may ask you if you want to upgrade. I have seen this happen on Virgin America (VX) & US Air (US) but I can't remember if DL, NW, CO offered it also on the flights I did.

Haven't flown AA so can't comment on them.

Unlikely to be able to buy an upgrade on a domestic flight.I have certainly seen it on their longhaul sectors.
With domestic flights AA top tier fliers get complimentary upgrades.Other elites earn or buy stickers/coupons to upgrade so any one else has little chance.

Which explains why AA's top tier fliers expect FOC upgrades on QF when flying domestically in Oz as one hotly retorted when told QF don't have the same policy "why not, AA do it all the time".

Believe it or not, back in the 90's, Qantas (and Ansett) used to give 'complimentary upgrades' for top level Gold Elites.

Every three flights in high level Y¹ class used to garner a Business class BP on checkin.

When they stopped this QFF actually send a letter out notifying of the withdrawal of the unwritten benifit but stating that as the best flyers Gold would be first in line for op-ups.

¹ Used to book Y class as back then QFF gave one point per Km in Y, but only 0.7 per km in discount economy classes.
