Hello,

I applied for an AMEX Platinum Card yesterday and today received a request for a copy of my pay slips. I am an existing AMEX customer and have always paid my cc off in full each month.

Is it normal to be asked for pay slips?

Thanks

I did an online transfer application earlier this month to transfer a gold Amex gathering dust across to a Discovery card. They required an update of my employment and before tax salary details which was a bit difficult being self employed and the various tax effective arrangements in place.
the online form was rather simplistic (no other card details required) yet was approved a last week without needing any confirmation. Half expected them to refuse or cut my $25K limit.

AMEX never asked me... but it has been quite some time since I got my cards. Maybe they are tightening up their credit approval? Citibank on the other hand wanted anything and everything...

I've reconsolidated my AMEX cards recently and from my most recent platinum charge card application, they didn't ask for anything and the application form actually confirmed the instant approval once I hit the submit button.

As a part of the charge card, I also applied for the platinum reserve card (which is complimentary) and being a credit card, they did have a longer application form asking a bit more information about my income and expenses but this too was instantly approved the moment I hit the submit button.

Both applications were done fairly recently (within the past 3 months) so I doubt the process would have changed that significantly over the past few weeks.

EDIT: To further add, 3 of my colleagues from work also followed the above process (we changed how expenses are paid firm-wide) between January-March 2013 and none of them had any requests to send in any payslips. Two of them did call AMEX though after a few hours they've applied with the reference numbers to ensure that the application came back approved as they needed to go on a business trip fairly soon.

It's quite possible for this to be more common - over the last few years the legislative landscape has changed a lot regarding responsible lending...

Charge and credit cards are quite different products so entirely possible that one asks for more than the other.

Amex etc use risk matrixes to decide what information they want. It could be as simple as a certain employment type is a higher risk, certain postcodes, length of time at an address. Previous history of the address etc. All sorts of stuff. Some of the models used are very complex.
