So I had my call with Centurion the other day. Apparently they have been "refreshing" the card in the last few months and while this refresh was happening, they declined applications but are now able to miraculously offer me a Centurion.

$5k joining and $6.5k annual fee and informed neither could be waived.

I don't think the benefits really stack up but the only thing I'm considering is the discount they claim they can grab on cash flights in J/F.

We (2 adults and a toddler) are likely to be making a few trips to Europe and the USA in the next couple of years and if as the Amex rep said they can get 20% off, together with transfers and fast track at arrivals, then it might make sense over the space of a few years.

Anecdotally, has anyone found that the discount pricing for J/F international flights is anything approaching 20%?

Amex offered me the card a few years ago and when I see the price t almost died in laughter,, you would have to be stark raving mad to pay this much for a credit card, it's a wank...

There is other cards out there for a fraction of the cost that have decent perks and points, including other Amex card through 3rd parties.

And before you go on about you spend 1 million dollars a year and how it’s worth the money. if you are spending over 500k a year Amex should give you one for free, they would be crazy not to., if you have a good spending history with paying on time most will give you one.

As for the points, good luck in getting decent OS business or first-class seats anymore, they are rare as hens’ teeth.

And for the record, I got rid of my Amex card after I spend 38k on Tokyo Olympic tickets through the Olympics approved seller, No tickets, no refunds and NO insurance on the Amex card that I paid it with, their travel insurance is not worth the paper it's written on, and be assured they are all the same. And it's not the first time, many others like me have found out the hard way. Their insurer is CHUBB and they couldn't care less how much you waste a year on a credit card.

Couple hundred-dollar card now that give me about.75 Qantas points and I pay for my travel insurance through real companies.

Tbhhh, I think everyone secretly knows this card is a wank. But as far as my own personal hypothesis goes — as a lowly platinum cardholder — I reckon the kind of people who do get the Centurion card think of it less as a financial product and more as a luxury and discretionary spend (as they would when considering to pay a similar $15K for a Cartier Santos watch, non-BW Chanel Classic Flap handbag or Van Cleef & Arpels mother of pearl necklace).

But, unlike those aforementioned items which could simply be bought 'off the rack' by any Tom, Dick and Harry should they be successful in soldiering the queues on Castlereagh Street (Sydney) on a Sunday morning, the Centurion card presents a very unique case in that it's incredibly hard to acquire because one must be invited to 'buy' the Centurion card. At this level, for the right man/woman who is rubbing shoulders with the right crowd, the 15k/year Centurion card may just prove to be a steal for them while also being that holy grail piece they've always needed. (ie. A total wank)

The Centurion is aimed at a specific market. A market segment that isn't necessarily looking at it from a value for money perspective.

I can't believe I have only discovered the Centurion card today through a travel agent who suggested their services would suit me (if I had the required spend). I have had a Qantas gold for 8 years with a monthly spend of 100-250,000. I declined the platinum card at the time given the annual fee and because I didn't see any additional benefits to teh gold. Now I have read some of the posts above re the Centurion, I am keen to handball my travel bookings etc to someone at AMEX. Am I right in thinking I have to have a platinum card before I could ask to be considered for a Centurion card? How long will I need to have the platinum for? I do have an account manager at AMEX but have never responded to his contact - lesson learned

No point getting it now as Apple Pay has ruined the thrill of bringing out the black card to pay for your VCA Christmas necklace 😂

qutie a few years ago, when the explorer card was relatively brand new, I was stopped by some AMEX booth people overseas and i showed them I already had an AMEX (pulled out the black exlorer card), and they thought it was THE black card, IE the centurion.
I didn't correct them ;)

Mine was Blue - although I recall thinking to the uninformed, it might pass as a Centurion. Did Explorer originally come in Black? I've moved on from Explorer since the deval but am curious.

Maybe it was blue, but it was a extremely dark blue. I've moved on too

I’ve seen some lists on AFF complied by Centurion members. A search should bring it up. In short, it has close to the same feature set as Platinum and no travel credit like you get with Platinum so if you’re looking to get $6,500 worth of value out of it, it’s just gotten $450 harder.

OS Centurion is not a card for points collectors though in AU it is more so with the highest earn rate but not by very much - 2.5 MR (vs 2.25 for Platinum) but I think depending on how much you value your points, need to put through quite a bit of spend to cover the extra AF if you’re not using any of the other features.
