Do Amex complimentary flights earn eligible sectors?
I need 1 more sector to upgrade to Platinum but my next flight is an Amex redeemed flight so a, hoping it counts as already have enough status credits.

Thanks

Unfortunately not. I didn't earn any points, status credit, or elegible sectors even with my velocity no. in the booking for my comp. amex flight.

I downgraded from the Velocity Platinum Amex to the Escape. The comp flight is difficult to find availability, plus the comp booking system is always down. In addition, you have to book restricted sectors based upon where you live. The comp flight doesn’t earn sectors or status, punish. I would much rather a VA credit.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

If you book a flight using FlyBuys points it will be treated as if you had paid cash.

Great minds think alike: Amex free annual flights :p

The $450 QF credit on the QFF Amex card does allow you to earn status credits and points, I believe, because it's like booking through any other third party system.

However, VA does not. I guess VA's idea here is that the flight is free, so they won't give you anything else on top of that. Fair enough, I guess. But, we can only dream!

Use it to fly to some tin-pot far flung airport that would normally cost $500-$700 from SYD, MEL or HBA, and it sounds better than the QFF Amex card.

Can you use this free flight to redeem on a Christmas or Cocos Island trip? Does that count as a domestic or an international connection?

Can't even do rewards flights to Cocos and Christmas I

A shame because VA could really lend a hand to boosting some tourist revenue over there!
Cocos has boomed since COVID as WA people were allowed to go there but not interstate.
Think it's still booked out.

Christmas Island is booked out too. Even the locals are queuing for security, never mind the tourists: :p
