Now this may sound convulated but bear with me..
I have an Amex Plat card along with the free reserve with its free return flight per yr.
We now know (from threads there) that you can get a shell credit with VA from cancelling the Amex free flight. I'd imagine then that you can use the credit for whatever booking you want with VA.
Now I also have VMAs high flyer card which gives me 4 complimentary seats on the same flight as me when i book and pay with my VMA card.
In this case, as I would be paying extra on top of the credit to complete my booking with VA, could I then use 2 of my complimentary coupons for a free return flight for my partner?
Havent tried it but seems plausible..?
