Hi,

I have the Amex plat and reserve card and Mrs Calgarychris has just received an Edge card in her name. When setting her up, I presume that points accrue in her name, to her FF programs correct? When I'm activating the card, can I say yes to an online account and have her card registered under my online profile (for ease of management)?

Out of interest's sake, where couples are both churning cards, how do you manage the accrual of points? Are people transferring points from one person to the next (which FF programs outside of QFF and VA allow this?), or am I missing a trick? I am struggling to see what I will do with the orphaned points if they're under her name, given that I will only be putting groceries and fuel on her card.

Thanks

We have done the same as you. I have the Plat Charge and Plat Reserve, My partner has the Plat Edge (now we both have a flight each) :)

From the Amex T&C's: The surname on your American Express Card will need to be the same as the surname that appears on your Airline Rewards or Frequent Guest partner program That transfer will be administered solely by American Express. They also state that Membership Rewards points can only be transferred by you into an account in your name.

Some airlines (Emirates for one) only allow one card (or rewards account since the plat charge and plat reserve all dump points into my one rewards account) to be linked to the FF account (So you can't link your Plat Charge and the Plat edge to the same FF account). I don't see any restrictions for Qantas or Velocity though. I'm only guessing you could transfer from your partners card to your FF account.

My partner doesn't use my surname, so we can only transfer his Plat Edge rewards points to Velocity, QF, or others that allow family transfers. Obviously, KF does't allow that. Qantas have relaxed family transfer rules recently I think I read, but we only really do 1-2 transfers a year between us.

I haven't asked them if we can transfer points between card holders, but I've never read where it's allowed (or online where anyone has done so).

To answer the section of your post that's in bold, typically the answer is no. Just in the same way that you can't ring up and make decisions on the account that only a primary cardholder can, you can't manage the account from your profile as you are two separate legal entities. If you have a supplementary card you can usually get a profile that lets you see your transactions only...

Whilst it might be more convenient for you, it would be a lot of hassle for issuers to seek and record detailed permissions from cardholders where they want someone else to have access to their accounts.

Yeah, and while that's probably true, the reality is that in most households, one individual typically takes responsibility for finances…but anyway, your comment is no doubt correct :)

Thanks
