amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

We have the plat edge and the explorer
Have had the velocity plat in the past
cheers

You should have no problems getting the bonus points. I had an Edge card (Ascent) and then applied for the Charge (Ascent Premium) and got the bonus points (I declared the Edge on my Charge app).

The key to getting AMEX bonus points is not having (or have had in the last 18 months) a reward account of the same type as the card you are opening. In the case of the Charge that is the Ascent Premium program, which you currently don't have, so you should get the points.

Good luck with your application - good referral bonus's on at the moment.

Big thanks to all on this thread for answering my numerous questions.

I signed up via the Points Hack 120k sign-up bonus link. New card turned up today.

How long does it usually take for Amex to give you your sign up bonus points once you've met the min spend criteria for the Platinum Charge?

Have just met my min spend criteria and am waiting on the points for a redemption opportunity :)

Usually the bonus points will post along with the transaction that met the minimum spend. Usually 1-3 days depending on the merchant.

Yep - my wife's posted within a day - however mine - an engineers australia one - they are making me wait the 10-12 weeks - they have confirmed in writing that I am eligible - just waiting for points...

Ah bummer, mine is a CA one, so perhaps I'll need to wait it out too :(

Hi all

I just got my Platinum charge card today after applying for it last week - that was very quick

I spoke to Amex today over the phone and I asked if there was a companion card for the Platinum Charge card and they said it was the The Platinum Edge card .
On reading this thread I noticed people have been getting the Platinum Reserve Card .

Have things changed recently ?

Cheers

I don't anything has changed, perhaps the operator got the cards mixed up. Wouldn't make sense for them to provide a card which has a higher earn rate than the Platinum. The Reserve had the exact same earn rate.

Maybe just ask them to send out the Reserve application.

As robbo135 has said, I'm pretty sure it is the Plat Reserve - although I'd really like a companion Edge, so if you have success in getting the Edge as a companion, please let me know!

Anyone know if i can apply for this card when i already have Dj amex, edge and explorer?

I'm a fraction surprised you've got 3 AMEX credit cards already. Nice work. I've always thought AMEX had a rule of no more than 1 x charge card and 2 x credit cards per member. Back to your situation, I reckon you'll be right as you don't already have a Charge card - you probably don't have much to lose by applying, the worst AMEX can say is no you already hold too many cards.

I have a Personal Charge, a Reserve, an Edge and an Accelerator. I think 'business' cards dont count in the total

I was sent the form for the Plat Reserve about two weeks ago. When I called up about something and checked on the progress, the guy did say something about the Edge being approved. I corrected him and said I believe its the Reserve and his response was along the lines of "yes same thing". The card should arrive this week. I'll report back when I get it.

I got a gold charge, Amex reserve and eng Aust gold. I want to get a plat charge again but don't think I'll get the bonus points

How much are you guys putting through this card? At the moment im thinking of only getting it for the bonus and card benefits. As for actual use, i dont think i would put as much thru compared to the edge/explorer..
