Unfortunately due to an operation I will have to cancel our trip to Singapore on Qantas. According to Qantas, they are prepared to place the tickets in a refund status, however the cost of rebooking the next time will erode the value of the refund significantly

Other option is to cancel, which result in a loss of around 1200 dollars.

Will Amex charge card insurance cover the 1200 loss?

How have others managed this scenario?

It should, If your illness/condition is not pre-existing (includes ANY condition in the past 2 years that you've had medication for, had consultation, investigation, follow up, or check-up OR any cardiac or circulatory condition basically EVER. If it's a new condition (they use terms like necessary and unavoidable, so elective knee surgery from that old golf injury may not cut it...)

They will pay non-refundable deposits and pre-paid expenses like tours, hotels, etc. Also the retail price of the airfare if you used points and the points can't be recovered + "other reasonable additional expenses incurred".

$30K max per trip

We've had to have letters from the doctor (using terminology that expresses the urgency and inability to do at another time), and letters from the hotel and airline saying they won't refund us X dollars. I've had some claims go well with ACE, and other have been a game of chase. Your documentation and what how you state things will be key.
