Anyone managed to get the $395 AMEX Platinum Credit Card annual fee waived (or at least discounted?)

I previously had the AMEX Rewards Maximiser gold card ($192 annul fee) wavied each year - However I just got rid of that card given I can't transfer the points I earn with it over to QFF post-April.

Some have reported success, but given the flights/hotel rooms attached to the card it is a more difficult proposition.

Also, the platinum credit card itself, as far as I am aware (having one), won't by itself help you get points to QFF after April.

I have a Platinum Credit Card, but haven't tried waiving the fee so I can't help you there.

It was also my understanding that transfers to Qantas were ceasing and that only the Platinum Charge Card (and Qantas co-branded products like the Qantas Amex Card) had this option. Of course I am happy to be proven wrong! Actually come to think of it I don't really care if I am, Qantas isn't likely to be getting my MR points either way :p

Just rang Amex and they confirm the Amex Platinum Credit Card CANNOT transfer rewards points to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program - I thought it was eligible! Oh well post April I guess I won't be needing this card anymore either...glad I got the promo 30,000 points given to me in time....

I believe only the 'charge' card can still maintain the ability to QFF transfer.

I've got an Rewards Maximiser and was wondering what to do with the card from March on. I haven't tried asking for a fee waiver, so how much would I need to spend per annum for them to make it fee free?

Do you just ask them for the fees to be waived or do you have to threaten to cancel the card in order for them to offer the waiver?

Been wondering the exact same thing..... have a Platinum Credit Card and I have written to AMEX THREE TIMES now over the past couple of years asking if there will be a future option to transfer points to AA. Not a peep in reply. Couldn't give a rats apparently!

Yeah, I know about SPG but the transfer rate isn't all that hot. Guess that is my only option though, not keen on giving points to Qantas.

Perhaps another airline doesn't want them offering that option? (not naming any airline of course....)

I find it's better to use their own words against them.

If they will waive the Gold fee but not the platinum - get them to waive $192 off your platinum card. You'll find this will be easier than getting the entire thing waived (I'd suggest you would need to be spending a lot, or carrying a large balance from month to month (+interest)) to have it waived.

:p

Or get a platinum charge card, then they waive your credit card fee's ;) but thats a 900 dollar card.
Good luck, i like you managed to get the gold rewards maximiser fee waived prior to a plat card since then no chance and no point asking i did not think.

If you transfer your points over to QFF program, then come post-April you WILL NOT be able to do this anymore with the Amex Rewards Maximiser.

When I held the Amex Rewards Maximiser card, I managed to get the fee waived 3 years in a row. I usually put though at least $30k a year on the card (non-business related spend).

To get the fee waived, I jut ring up and tell them I wish to cancel my card. When they ask why I tell them "I do not want to pay the annual fee" - they then put me on hold and I assume look at my spend history, etc...they then say "Well you have been a valuable member of Amex since xx_ - would you stay with us if we waive the annual fee this year" and I say "yes please - can I have a reference number for this phone call" - done..

Of course you have to be prepared to cancel the card if they don't call your bluff. Worst case, just change your mind, suck it up and pay the annual fee

I tried to cancel my card early last year but they offered a $100 DJs gift card, which I accepted (and made good use out of).

Just recently, they offered me the Platinum Charge Card for $600, so I took them up on the offer, as it also pays for the Platinum Credit Card (which fell due). The card has saved me about $1,000 already in other areas, so it has proven worthwhile for me. It also means I can delay my decision with what to do with all my MR points and general card reward strategy.

It remains to be seen whether a $900 annual fee will be justifiable when it falls due next year.

I called Amex about a month before the Qantas Premium card anniversary and asked them when the annual fee was due to be charged. They gave me the date and I said I was evaluating whether the card was giving me any benefits or not as the annual fee was too high.

After going through 2 call centre staff I was finally put through to the cancellations team and the person on the phone offered to waive the annual fee "just this once as you are a good customer" and gave me his name and number and asked me to call back after the annual fee was charged. Called back after the annual fee was charged and the annual fee was refunded a few days later.

I will be asking for the annual fee to be waived again next year....

Ah yes, I'd nearly forgotten, I got an annual fee waiver on that card, too. I was sincerely calling them to cancel the card because I didn't see the value in it, but they insisted, so I kept it... It came in handy for the two complimentary QP passes, I guess... :)

I closed my Ultimate card sincerely too. No argument from them just closed it. I wish I'd kept it now, but never mind.
