Amex is issuing 7500 points for QF card, 25000 points for Velocity card. That's a significant difference.

Per dollar spend, QF earns 1.25 points whereas Velocity earns 1.5 points.

Anticipating significant collection of points, which is better value of these cards in terms of redemption for flights?

I think they're roughly the same levels of redemption but VA have much lower fees and taxes.

My own value of both QF and DJ points is 3c each, but DJ seems to offer more opportunity to spend those points and in that more opportunity for business class travel using relatively low exchange of points.

I went with the Velocity Amex myself and its been a good earner/redeemer not hit by the reduction in points earn for ATO and utilities as other Amex's have been. The included free flight also offers some opportunity: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....x-free-flight-upgrade-34297-3.html#post612538

Sound advice...thanks for that.

Do you guys normally redeem domestic flights with Velocity? Am I correct in saying for the international long haul burn rates are very poor on DJ?

Not sure on anybody's definition of poor.

I have redeemed J flt MEL-LAX ret Sept 12 / 25 - 188K pts + abt $600 taxes - QF is 192K pts is it not?

SQ is 164K which is much preferrable if you have the time.

I don't think so. 188,000 points for a return J SYD-LAX on a fare that retails for, on a good day, $6,000 - that's better than 3c per point.

Domestically using them for J upgrades from flexis on A330 services seems to be the best value (and half-price till 31 December)

Thx guys. Is VA J seat and service as good or better than QF A380 or SQA380 J? This is for the LAX route...

I've applied for the Velocity platinum card. Hope to spread points across different airline programs...QF, SQ, CX, VA, US Airways.

One more benefit is I'd get two tickets per year...one thru Platinum Reserve card, the other thru Velocity Platinum card.

I am really struggling with Velocity points.

I have some points but VA does not fly to Asia so one has to use SQ or VS awards which are not easy in my experience. I have no desire to use their other partner(s) to go to Europe.

My best possible strategy is to continue earning Amex MR points on Ascent Platinum Rewards card and Qantas Premium card.

I will only earn Velocity points for flights and will more than likely redeem them for an award to the USA.

other than coughet.
Stop with coughet already.

I need to make my way over to Perth on points booking and then go to coughet on a 737 for a 6+ hour trip on separate points booking as the 2 points bookings do not go together. I try to avoid 737's where possible on 1 hour trips so not too sure how I would survive a 6+ hour trip unless I was really desperate. And then I would have to get to BKK!

This is where Qantas has it so over on Virgin. And before you say I am playing favourite I actually have my feet in both camps for this membership year as I should reach Velocity Gold in my own right not on a complimentary basis.

Received my Velocity card by Express Post. Very impressed with prompt processing of application and service.

BTW, I heard welcome announcement on aircraft where velocity credit card holders are acknowledged. Is there more to it?

I hear you on this one!

I'm trying to get out to HKT this year and have enough points and the will to give DJ a shot at it ... but the idea of 6+ hours on what is, I assume, a domestic config 737 sends shudders of horror through me

I pine for the days the 777 did MEL/BNE-HKT - if only they'd return to that route, I'd even settle for the 738 (let alone 330) if J awards were available.

I may be mistaking what you mean here .. but J class reward seats are available on the 738 from PER to HKT (and I assume MEL/SYD/BNE/etc). About 48K points each way + 100$. As its a DJ flight number I assume J upgrades from Flexi are available too. Even given this, and a J upgrade is probably how I'd want to do it, 738 J is not fabulous and I barely made it to MEL from PER alive last time I tried - thank god all the flights seem to be 332 now. 6+ hours would be just awful with the extremely limited recline of the 738 J seating and the noise of these planes.

You're not - I knew it as I wrote it, just didn't clarify. Naturally you'd need a stop somewhere reasonable (DRW?) in order to make it bearable - but I'd still be happy with that over the current PER hop. Though continuing on the 330 all the way would certainly alleviate that. ;)
