Interesting, but I'd rather spend with a friendly TA - although the points are attractive.

I have just checked Qantas airfares for August and the price quoted was $170 for a BNE-SYD return which is the same as Qantas website. I have not taken quote through to final page but I cannot see any additional charges from Amex such as booking fee etc. Is that correct?

Works out at about 6 points per dollar spent. That's ok, but isn't as good as the 11 ppd offered by hotelclub's amex program. I'm guessing the price and availability is much better through Amex's travel site. Is the hotelclub deal still running?

Ausff, unfortunately I believe yuo are correct that spend on flights does not qualify, as the T&C's state:

on eligible hotels, car hire or experiences before 27th March 2014

I don't classify experiences as a flight - but others might

You are not wrong... see T&Cs at point 5. Flights and cruise books are not eligible for the offer.

Can't see that destination is important to the $400 sale, just that the purchase must be made in Australia.

I have received benefits and hotel points too for my hotel bookings with AMEX, although the rates weren't prepaid but were the postpay FHR rates.
