Will be arriving in London next week and this morning received a pre arrival email from the hotel (unusual to any pre arrival emails I've received in the past, but considering it is London during their busiest time, not hardly surprising).
My guess is that a lot of hotels in London may be doing the same thing in advance for their guests, but never seen an alert that says "we reserve the right to search luggage being stored".
Anyway, just wanted to share!

Dear Guest,
Increased Security Measures
In the interest of your safety we have enhanced some security measures at this hotel. We have
increased our security team and patrol the exterior and interior of the hotel more frequently. We
also ask for your cooperation to keep the driveway and forecourt as clear as possible and do not
leave your vehicle unattended unless parked in a dedicated parking area.

As a means of further enhancing security for our guests, Hilton Worldwide has introduced the
requirement for identity to be proven by presentation of a current driving licence, passport, identity
card or two different forms of credit card. We assure every guest the records taken will not be used
by or beyond this hotel, and are purely to ensure that all residents staying in the hotel can be
identified as such.

For the time being we will store luggage only for residents in house and we reserve the right to
search such luggage being stored. If we can ask for your assistance in not leaving your belongings
unattended, please stay with your bags at all times when in public areas.
We would like to reassure all guests that these measures are purely precautionary and are merely
visible additions to our comprehensive existing security procedures.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and ask for your understanding and patience in helping
us to ensure that this hotel is as safe and secure as possible for all our guests.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Yeah, not too surprising at the moment. London would be on the "super paranoid" pills. For good reason too - there are a lot of locally based nutters there.

Seems to be an acceptable method for a hotel to assist in counter-terrorism.

I'm wondering if BNE hotels (or at least some of them) will do the same for the 2013 G20 summit.

They've been nothing but helpful pre arrival inc personal emails of the concierge and other things. I think it's great. Never seen anything like it from other Hilton's have had major events happening in the city

The requirements for photo ID or two credit cards is not much different - I routinely hand over passport or driving licence plus credit card for charging as I greet the check in staff.

Wondering about this though:

Does this mean if you check out in the morning, they won't store your luggage any more after you head out for the day?

I think they would piss far too many people off if they did that so I would say no. I don't know for sure, but they had no issue with keeping my bags the other day for 6 hours (Waldorf).

I stayed at a Hotel in SIN and they had an attack on one of there other hotels in the chain in another country so they where doing airport type security checks and even scanning bags and also using the mirrors and checking the boot on all cars coming and going.
