First new A380 customer for years.
Only three aircraft - being purchased to operate Tokyo-Hawaii routes

Airbus Wins All Nippon as Customer for A380 Superjumbos - Bloomberg Business

Somewhat surprised that for a small order like this they didn't pick up the aircraft that MH is still looking to sell

Being a holiday route be interested in the density of the seat plan (although ANA of the 2x4x2 787 has been more generous than others)

Will be good to see new customers and orders for a sensational aircraft, along with perhaps the -900 version, the NEO version to satisfy EK and keep the plane on target for growth and development.

Think the 748 already dead as a passenger aircraft, only future as a freighter - 63 freighters produced versus 38 pax

This will be HNL's first scheduled A380 service (unless another airline starts them before ANA gets theirs up and running).

HNL is A380-capable, but only handles those aircraft as diverts at present.

JohnPhelan, just wondering, how would one know whether airports (that dont currently serve A380s) are A380-capable? Is there a list?

I very much doubt that there will ever be either an NEO or a -900. Airbus basically bet on the wrong market. Having a single airline buying the vast majority of the aircraft is not a particularly healthy situation. Whilst I'm sure they're pleased to have sold a couple of new aircraft to ANA, that does little to offset the order list which is rapidly running out of real orders. There are many deferrals that will never be built, and in the case of Skymark, a number of aircraft have been built, and are now 'white tails'. I wouldn't be surprised if these turn out to be the ANA aircraft.

First move away from Boeing. Could be the deathknell for the 748i

It's a big psychological win for Airbus, as NH and JL have long been (mostly) wedded to Boeing in the widebody market.

The Skymark frames were my first thought as well

Looking a bit further into it, and I see that ANA own 16.5% of Skymark, which I think makes it even more likely that these orders are related to the SM aircraft.

Airbus was taking legal action against SM and its owners for payment for the built 380s. Sounds like some form of settlement.

Just did a look at the schedule for mid-year and they currently have 2 x 763s and 1 x 788 departing within 2:20 of each other. I suppose that consolidation with an A388 could be feasible.

These might be so heavily discounted that a brand new aircraft may not have been much more expensive?

While I love the 747, I have a lot of respect for the A380 (and it's an incredibly comfortable aircraft in, especially in 1A :) ) and it would be sad to see it being a commercial failure.

Whether the Airbus A380 will ever be profitable for its manufacturer results in sharply divided opinions by the experts quoted in this link, but given the small number of orders (even considering EK's support for the A380) and the usual 'discounts' from the nominal list price for which it is sold to airlines, it is very hard to see it ever being a commercial success:
