Qantas faces greater competition on flights between Australia and Japan next year as speculation mounts that All Nippon Airways will resume flying on the Sydney-Tokyo route after a long absence.

The likelihood of Japan's dominant domestic carrier resuming direct flights to Australia for the first time in years follows Qantas recently announcing plans to boost services to Japan.

The expansion of international services has been driven by Japanese authorities awarding new slots for airlines at Haneda, the airport closest to Tokyo's central business district. Japan's Transport Ministry has also halved landing fees between 11pm and 7am in a bid to encourage more international airlines to fly to Haneda Airport.

Japan's biggest newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun, has reported that ANA will commence services next year between Sydney and Tokyo's Haneda Airport. ANA last operated services to Sydney in July 1999.

A spokesman for ANA was unavailable for comment.

It would be very convenient to have a *A carrier operate direct Australia to Japan to save transit in Singapore or Seoul, particularly if they operate their 787 on this route.

This is nothing but speculation and rumor.
You make it sound like a done deal.

This was reported last week in ABT, I asked wether it was coming to Melbourne,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I live in hope?! I have never flown with ANA, but have used JAL.
I await the outcome.

Hopefully this gives me an option to use some significant but orphaned Vs award points.

If this is to get up-and-running by 25 October as rumoured, would you expect the announcement and bookings to open up fairly shortly?

Hopefully ANA will follow JAL and introduce F service to SYD sometime in the near future, even if only for the summer months. I'm very keen to try their product.
