Hi all,
There are a few threads which deal with using AusPost Post Billpay (no, not BPay) - usually combined with PayPal as the payment method - to avoid credit card fees. Great, and I'm much obliged to the posters in those threads for that info. One thread (I don't know how to link, sorry) from 2008/9 provides an insight into the AusPost payment system when you use PostBillPay in person at the Post Office, with one option of simply trying to convince the Post agent to accept a credit card when one is not accepted by the biller. But it seems that this 'loophole' was closed when AusPost updated their systems. There doesn't seem to be a thread that deals specifically with this issue - perhaps because you creative thinking AFFers have found a way around the problem !
I have hit a few snags using this method online, particularly with biller codes which are 3 rather than 4 digits. Usually these are ones with an asterix and 3 digits. The online portal will not accept a 3 digit code, nor the asterix as a character in that field. And yes, I have searched the AusPost Billpay list of billers and they (DEFT - Macquarie) are listed but it doesn't show a valid code to use online.
Has anyone found a way to get around this one ? Does buying a Postal Money Order or some other intermediary voucher (using your credit card) work ?
Anyone had success (more recently than the 2008/9 thread would indicate) trying the payment in person with a credit card ? I'm sure I read somewhere that one AFFer used a marker pen to cover the Amex logo on their card - now that's inspired but did it work, not just payment accepted in the Post Office but did the biller subsequently charge a fee or the Card Issuer treat it as a cash advance and deny points earn ?
