Good morning to you all and Season Greetings.

I've been lurking around AFF for some time and decided to finally join up to this wonderful resource. My family and myself are only occasional flyers (not exactly "frequent") but we have slowly increased our travel in recent months and have a few flights booked throughout 2013.

I have a few questions so when I find the appropriate forum section, I'll post them and look forward to exchanging lots of ideas and opinions.

Welcome aboard, always good to have flyers of all frequencies here. There is loads of information here that will be beneficial to you. Happy travelling.

Hi marlinspike,

Welcome to AFF. :D

Welcome! and you may find your infrequent travel turns into more frequent after being on the forums for a while!

Thanks for the welcome Hvr, Straitman and mella. I'm already spending a lot of my time reading through AFF. I used to be a FF with Ansett for many years but my jobs changed shortly after they stopped flying :(. I then started occasional flights about 10 years ago. I generally take advantage of the sales, as well as using my FF points to upgrade.

Thanks Simo. About half of my flights are actual holidays, the other half are just for the joy of flying to another destination, some lunch, wander around the airport, then a same-day return flight. Am I weird or do others do the same??? ;)

If you are weird for flying to another destination, hanging around for a bit and then a same day return flight (or even better, fly off to some where else - rinse and repeat) then methinks a lot of us here are weird too. I personally like to turn it into a short stay and spend a day or three in a new place just to explore somewhere I haven't been yet.

I enjoy being weird. It has given me lounge access (with out having to buy a separate membership), travel in J (business) and not have to pay full fare. What is not to love?

Study the forums, learn the drill and look forward to traveling in the pointy end.

Welcome to AFF.

Phew, I'm not alone. Thanks for confirming it for me ;)

I did a JASA MR flying MEL-SYD-AYQ-SYD-MEL recently. About 20 minutes in Ayers Rock before reboarding with the same crew on the flight back.

We understand.

Welcome to AFF.:D

Yesterday I flew from Melbourne to Sydney, had lunch at Sydney Airport, then flew back - airfare cost was around $60 and a few points.

Welcome Marlinspike to AFF, this is the place to glean so much FF travel info its not funny and probably like many its easy to get hooked after the experts respond, and there are a few who enlighten us all on the best way to use points.

Chasing points is the go, be it flying or via CC, booking a long way out (like 9/12 months) for international travel as a ASA (any seat award) is great.

And if one day you can reach gold status or above you sure will enjoy the benefits.

Nice trip, there Hvr. I've never been to AYQ or ASP for that matter. Must pencil that one in.

That's pretty much my type of day trip. Although I sometimes catch a cab into the SYD CBD to catch up with friends. Thanks for the welcome sertfy.

Cheers, Limewood. Yes I have accumulated sufficient FF points through CC and rewards schemes over the recent years, and along with taking full benefit of special offers, ASA etc, I use them to reduce costs as well as that occasion J upgrade.
