Hiya, now I did do a search but can't find the answer so thought I would ask the experts :)

I need 215 status credits before 31 December to retain my Gold Status. I will get a 50 SCt bonus from qantas on my next flight (tomorrow) as they twigged that I might be a bit short this year so I actually only need 165, from the following flights before 31 December:-

-45 - ADL to BRIS rtn (disc econ one way & full econ the other)
-40 - ADL to MEL rtn (will put in for full econ both ways & hope work dont notice ;))
- 55 - ADL to MEL to LAX (discount economy)
- ?? - LAX to SFO (on AA)
- ?? - Chicago ORD to NY LGA (on AA)

Then the dreaded status clicks over and I might go back to silver before I head from NY to Las Vegas on 3/1 on AA and back home on 9/1/09 LAX-SYD on Qantas (which I have put in for an upgrade from disc econ to business hence why my gold status is important if I am going to have any chance against the other ff's on the flight).

Given that I am 25 SC's short, can anyone tell me if I will earn SC's on the two AA flights in my itinery and if so how many?

I presume if I upgrade on either the ADL-BRS or ADL-MEL flights I will only get the economy SC's right?

If not, what are the chances of Qantas awarding me with Gold on the basis that I have the flight back to Aust with them on 9/1, especially given they already gave me the 50 SC bonus?

Should I just cut my losses and buy a cheap return ticket ADL-SYD to get 30 SCs and be done with it?

TIA :p

Assuming that you are booked in an eligable discount economy booking class booking class

LAX-SFO is 337 miles so earns 10 in discount economy
ORD-LGA is 733 miles so earns 15 in discount economy

( full economy would earn 2x and 1st would earn 6x the discount rate )

if you upgrade a flight you earn based on the fare paid for , not the class travelled

The eligable discount economy codes for AA are GLMNSVKHB

I guess it all depends on how much you value it - if its close to the same cost as a QP membership for a year you may as well as its not good to rely on QF's generosity all the time. Im pretty sure that they wont comp you on promised flights in the new year but i could be wrong.

You are very much like me - i am so close to getting silver but no time to get on a plane and get those precious SC's!

Thanks Dave Noble! I just checked and have a G Class and S Class ticket on AA so it looks like will get the 25 points that I need to requalify. Phew, talk about cutting it fine getting the final 15 SC's on the 30/12 as I fly in for NYE in NYC!

I'm not worried about Qantas Club membership as I still have about 18 months of prepaid from before I became Gold that I would be able to use if I dropped to silver. It was more about being higher on the upgrade list when I know it is so rare to get an upgrade these days if you are not platinum.

Just be aware that it can take up to a week for AA flights to post to your account. So keep an eye on it. You may need to call Qantas FF after it has posted if it was to late for their computer to recognise that you attained the required SCs during your membership year.

It can take longer than that! I have only had credited this week a flight from LAX to KOA on 28th September (and my QF FF number was on the AA BP). On AA you cannot claim missing points electronically, so keep your BPs, photocopy them and send the copies to the QF FF Service Centre in MEL. Better still, ring QF FF first and explain the problem if points and SCs are not credited. BTW I got upgraded to business from SYD to SIN and from HNL to SYD as a mere PS. Timing is everything

Well, I picked up an extra 20 SC's on my flight this week from BNE-ADL as I managed to get it re-routed at no extra cost via MEL  so ended up with 65 in total instead of 45. So will only be 5 SC's down before relying on AA flights to get me to gold by the end of December. I will make sure I call Qantas as soon as I've done my LAX-SFO flight to ensure all AA points are in my account so I re-qualify. Thanks everyone for your advice.

Some datapoints, my SFO-LAX flight on Sat 1st November posted Tuesday 4th.

Flights on 2nd all posted Wednesday 5th (PM), Monday 3rd flights posted on the 6th.

(Note that my QFF FF was correctly printed on each BP, as well as EMERALD or EMD in appropriate places.

Boo to Qantas FF Service Centre

Right now I am 60 SC's short of gold with my status expiring on 31/12. However, I have a Qantas flight from ADL-MEL-LAX on 21/12 to get me 55 SC's + 2 AA flights before 31/12 so I will definately re-qualify for Gold, but do you think they could send me out the new FF Gold card early ? NO! which means for my other AA flights in the US I will not be able to access the Admirals Club. OK, point taken ... so I asked if they could send me out a Qantas Club card because if I don't get Gold my Qantas Club membership will kick in (I have about 18 months up my sleeve) and then that will give me access to the Admirals Club ... NO, sorry, can't send you out a Qantas Club card either! WTF?

So ... has anyone had any success in getting the lounge guards for AA Admirals Club at NYJFK to look up their one-world status to gain access to the lounge? The FF service person (or rather non-service person) seemed to think that they wouldn't do that for me so I was doomed.

Can I presume that once I get to LAX for my flight home on 9/12 that the Qantas Club at LAX will be able to see the status on my Qantas boarding pass so I will at least get access in LAX.

I can't speak for gaining access @ AA lounges, but at Heathrow I gained access without my QP card when the desk person phone "Qantas" (I presume the ticket desk), recited my FF number and then let me in.

The boarding pass should have the oneworld sapphire level on it, so that should get you in.

For them to send out a new card, then they would have to manually renew you; there is no guarantee that you would subsequently fly the flights to get the 60 SCs. Seems perfectly reasonable that they would not send out the card

Without the card you may be ok with just the status on the BP however I think that you may be declined access. On my domestic flights here in the US I have been asked for my card and a colleague who travelled domestically recently was refused access at a cpl of lounges because he only had an expired card

Can I presume that once I get to LAX for my flight home on 9/12 that the Qantas Club at LAX will be able to see the status on my Qantas boarding pass so I will at least get access in LAX.

I think your odds are better here

That is standard OP for QANTAS. There is no gauarantee that you'll actually fly those flights, so until you earn the SCs, no new card.

which means for my other AA flights in the US I will not be able to access the Admirals Club.

Your status should be printed on your BP - and that's enough to get into any AA lounge you're entitled to in my personal experience.

For example, a couple of years ago I was in the same situation (I hadn't received my new card by the time I left for an overseas trip, and my old card expired whilst I was away). None the less, I was able to access AA lounges in JFK, Chicago and LAX without any issue prior to returning home.

In this situation, I would carry my expired card, and just show it with my boarding pass. If they comment that it's expired, advise that you've met the requirements and because you are overseas you havn't received your new card yet. If they still doubt entry, then try and get them to call and verify status. I'm not sure who AA needs to call, but they have that option.

A printout of your FF status from the website would also assist.

You won't have any problems with your gold status being renewed, and you mentioned in a previous post that you were were not worried about Qantas Club membership as you still had about 18 months of prepaid from before you became Gold that you could use, so just take your Qantas Club card with you for access to the lounges etc
