Just wondering if anyone has spent more than 24 hours in transit at LHR to wherever.

If so, i was wondering if you could leave the airport? (presumably yes) and you would have to recheck in regardless if you slept on a bench or some shady unnoticed corner of the lounge wouldnt you?

I found an interesting transit of saturday afternoon to monday morning, which gives me the chance to skip out of the airport and catch up with people, if that is actually possible.

Logic has it that they can not expect me to stay in the airport for 2 days!!! ... or can they?

Thanks again for your input and experience. :)

Once you exceed 24 hours, its no longer a transit but a stopover. You may leave the airport and you will need to collect your bags and re-check them since its a stopover. Also note that sionce its a stopover of >24 hours you will have to pay the very significant UK Air Passenger Duty (tax), which is based on the distance flown on your departing flight and the cabin into which you are booked.

oh yes of course you are right. So the tax will be paid separate to the ticket isnt it. 'sigh'.............. will need to work out how much tax that will be somehow.

Has your flight already been ticketed? APD is collected as part of the booking (and can be refunded if you don't fly). Depending on outward flight/class of travel the APD shouldn't break the bank - although an overnight stay in London could do some damage. APD charges are here .

thanks m8, no it hasn't been ticketed. Just considering my options at this stage. Will check out your linky.

So i assume then it would be part of the fines portion of a redemption with nothing extra then?

umm not too bad then. Thanks for the confirmation! But the thought of going through the checking process makes me go arhghhhghghhhhhh. Will have a think.
