For $300 (or 40,000 velocity points) you can use lounge facilities for a year.

And for $9,750 you can use Lounge facilities for either your lifetime or that of VA, whichever ends first!

Paid lounge membership isn't new to VA and it wasn't invented by US. Are you perhaps implying there's an offer at the moment which offers $300 membership for those other than Silver members? What US is well-known for is discounts on lounge membership.

As samh004 mentioned, this has been available for a long time - at least a couple of years. $750 for Red and $300 for Silver members. I recently joined, as I can salary sacrifice the cost through my employer, bringing the cost down to less than $200.
