Holding either the Charge or the Edge would be the most common way of linking the Explorer to Ascent.

You need to call Amex up, possibly multiple times, to get them to manually link the Explorer to Ascent.

Though if you already hold the plat/edge and apply for the Explorer, there's a good chance it'll be automatically linked to Ascent, as it was the case with me.

In my case, it was the opposite. I help the Explorer, then applied for and got the Platinum Charge. The link to Ascent was automatic.
