Last week I learned that cigarette purchases (cartons) do not count for Everyday Rewards. If I purchase these with my Amex card will I also not be "rewarded" with FF points?
Thanks for your help.

IIRC, AmEx don't care. As long as it's a purchase, you get points.

Yep, buy a $100 carton of smokes at a woolies with your Amex and earn MR points as for any $100 purchase, but earn no points via EDR.

Another example would be to buy a $100 carton of smokes and two slabs of beer at the same wollies for $170 all up earn MR points as for any $170 purchase, and earn 40 points via EDR. ($40 is the amount by which the non cigarette puchases exceed $30)

Yes every puff will earn plenty in the Frequent Dier Program.

While redemptions are plentiful, they are not that popular.

I don't smoke, don't care for people who do smoke but am a little concerned by Woolworths moral stance on this. It is ok to sell people mechanically recovered meat or sticks of butter and earn points on the way to the grave but it is not ok to smoke...

I do wonder whether obesity or lung cancer is a great burden on the Australian medical system...

I think you'll find the issue for Woolworths is legal rather than moral (i.e. it is illegal in some states to award shopper loyalty points for tobacco products).

simongr, surely the comparison is eating any fatty food in moderation and not to excess, versus smoking in moderation. Which do you think is going to be more unhealthy?

My issue is with both Woolies and the state governments.

I actually don't know. What I do know is that they sell lard in lumps of 250g and I don't any amount of lard is good for you.

Woolworths dont seem to have a stand, its illegal to offer rewards for purchasing tobacco based products now in all states, when it was ok in some states Woolworths offered points, just as they do on alcohol etc.

Where they are allowed to incent you to buy a product they will, should Catholics get rewards points for birth control, Muslims for Pork etc etc, at the end of the day its the individual who has the choice.

It would likely be a combination of both?

Woolworths is prevented by law to give points for purchasing tobbacco.

Do I get Qantas Frequent Flyer points when I purchase a Cigarettes?

No. Purchases of tobacco products/service are restricted by law from earning points.

My point is that Woolworths are only implementing a legal requirement, they are not taking a moral stance as you claimed.

Same reason you don't get FF points for tobacco purchases at SYD/F1RST duty free etc.

I think it does nothing to reduce smoking, but I'm not a lawmaker.

It’s great for making pastry, dad used some in an apple pie over the weekend and the pastry was so flaky and wonderful :)

Of course, all in moderation ;)
