I am certain this has been discussed many times before, but in case it hasn't...

Qantas classic award flights are super cheap tickets, and therefore you don't get anything - for example flexibility and ff miles. My question is, if you cough up the equivalent amount of points for a normal ticket with their new system, why don't you get miles for those flights?

The same question also applies to Virgin Blue. If I convert my velocity points to a virgin Atlantic flight from Sydney to Hong Kong that isn't the bargain basement rate (90,400 points) - do I get miles? If not why not?

By using points you are getting an Award flight, and award flights are excluded from earning FF points.

Why do you think they should pay you miles or SC's on your award booking?

If someone chooses an any time reward, they're only coughing up more pts because they didn't book a classic award in time, and QF are having to sell them a higher booking class for more pts, I don't see why QF should have to then pay pts on it.

Well the points earn/spend ratio would be at most 1:10 and often a lot worse, so it wouldn't quite work like that

Particularly with any seat awards it doesn't seem to me to really be-double dipping.

Well you accrue 4 weeks annual leave a year, and each year includes 4 weeks annual leave.. so, yes

It still seems to be to be a reward for spending money. I have a credit card that accrues ff points as I spend and, if I pay for a flight I also accrue points. I never considered that I could accrue points without spending. I do see what you're saying about the ration being poor (and I agree) but I'm still thinking that you seldom get something for nothing, or in this case, not spending. Perhaps I'm on the wrong track

It is normal practice in the travel business,eg airlines and hotels, that when you use points you do not earn points on such usage.

So it does not surprise me that Qantas do not award points on points used for award flights.

If you think about it logically Qantas decide the number of points required for an anytime flight. That calculation assumes you will not get more points by travelling on the award. If they were to award you points on the award flight then the points required for that award would go up.
Better to get the award for less points.

ALthough under HHonors under the rolling qualification period if you have an award stay at the end of the 12 month period after having racked up heaps on base points in the first month you will get your status extended for another 14 months based on an award stay.

Nothing is ever simple in loyalty schemes...

Not really. Compared to AA they are quite expensive. MEL-HKG in J would cost 120,000 points plus $300 in fines on QF. Same itinery on AA points would be 60,000 or 70,000 (cant recall) plus only real taxes.

Not really, your trying to get a "free" flight. Know the rules and whats going on around the world and you'll be amazed at the number of seats open. Most compaints stem from people wanting a flight at short notice. I mainly book my flights at least 6 months ahead. Some flexibility on the frequent flyer's part would go astry either.

I agree in part since the new Any Seat awards look like converting points into $ value used to purchase a "free" seat. Added that it has a very FREQUENT SPENDER flavour to it...

BUT, your still getting a "free" flight with QF not actually getting any money for the flight.

Again...your getting something for nothing...technically they havent received any $ from you.

You may get a stay credit, which can extend yout status (although who knows how the tier thing is working this week - it's a moving target), but they don't give you points on the stay.
