Anybody getting random Qantas Checkin Texts

Hi All,

For a month or so now I've been getting the odd random checkin SMS message for a booking reference I don't recognize and isn't in my trips. There has been nothing untoward on my points activity in terms of either points being credited from these mysterious bookings (that would be nice) nor any bookings made using my points.

Anybody else get these? I guess I could call QF but I don't expect them to help me at all.

No, the one that goes "Online check in for your flick opens soon. Use booking reference <number> and check in at Qantas.com/checkin or the Qantas app before arriving"

I haven't clicked the link....maybe it's a spoof to some scam

This makes me think someone gave your phone number by mistake in their booking?

very wise 👍

Quite possible - although I've been getting a few for different booking numbers. Maybe I'll call them and give them the number to see what happens

I’ve received these for multiple flights over a week. I put it down to the wrong phone number being in the booking. With the link I could see flight details and change seats and IIRC even see the passengers name.
An enhancement from QF! You can’t access your own booking and seat choices but now you can mess around with random strangers! :)

True. I only clicked the link because the messages became annoying and I though I might be able to unsubscribe.

If you opened the stranger's booking, did you see your phone number listed on it?

I didn’t go digging to find out. It was at a year or two ago.
Um, never do that! Log in to the ”real” site if you must check or respond.
unsubscribing from spam just confirms to the spammers that the email address is valid.

That’s a fair point. Qantas send a text message with a checkin link for all of my flights, so there is room to become complacent with links in the Qantas txt conversation. Normally, I do use the app or PC.

If the links come in SMS, it's easy to look at the URL and see if it actually ends in Qantas.com or Qantas.com.au. This isn't going to be some big mystery whether it's spam/phishing or legitimate URL - just look at it and don't click URLs to places that aren't actually Qantas.

But watch out for domain name URLs that look like they're legitimate but actually aren't, eg:
  • qan.tas/lookslegitright
  • qantas.bookingsystem.com/totallynotaphish
  • qantas.tv/selectyourinflightentertainmentpreference

I'm experiencing the same thing and the very unhelpful response from Qantas is that that can't do anything as the flights were booked through a travel agent.

Any ideas on next steps to get this resolved? The person who has used my number is a frequent traveller and it has become quite annoying.

Are they real or fake/spam?

Have you tried checking in for them and cancelling their flight? 😉

But, yes that would be very annoying. I had some idiot give out my number and I keep getting calls asking for Hxx_xx. I blocked most of them but obviously can’t do that for QF…

PS
Welcome to AFF.

They appear real. I identical to the legit messages I get about my own flights, and the links take you to qantas.com

Cancelling their flight feels like a bit of a rough move. Moving them to a bad seat however... 🤔
