Anyone here going to Virgin invited Ice Hockey Canada/USA match in Sydney June 17? (Typed June 16 in heading and now can't edit it!)

Got an RSVP invite to this during week, assumed it was a Velocity Platinum special event type thing.

USA/Canada Ice Hockey Grudge match at Sydney Olympic Stadium, with dressing room access, ring side seats, and so on.

Just wondered if any other AFF members will be there - might need to arrange special handshake etc!

Ice hockey? They mean 'hockey', surely?

I'll refrain from Tasmanian jokes.

Saw a sign for this on Hisense arena in Melbourne today.

Feel free to tell all the Tasmanian jokes you like. Haw, haw, haw. Although I've heard them each, oh maybe a thousand times, from those cheeky mainlanders - such cards - I always get a belly laugh out of hearing them ... again ...

I believe you that its been billed as Ice Hockey ... but we hockey purists call it hockey. But "the greatest rivalry in sports history"? Now that's funny.

I'm a huge Ducks fan, so I would go to this in a heartbeat! There is nothing quite as mad as a game of ice hockey. It's almost feral when they decide to bring out the biff.....

Have an awesome time if you go! We'll be at Origin next week.....

Damn, I've only ever got invites to some second-rate musical event I have zero interest in attending. I would go to this. Have fun

So who are the "Ducks"? Better show I have a vague knowledge of the game! :D

Went to a Predators game in Nashville last March. It was cold, the end.

Unless I'm taking a blanket, it's not my game but the crowd was fun. Didn't have much of a clue what was happening but the people around us helped, we were a novelty to them.

The Ducks are Anaheim's local team. Ironically, it was the Predators who bundled us out in game 6 of the Playoffs. But a good season overall. Once went to one of their home games at the Honda Center in Anaheim - we took our then 9 year old son. He was flicked a game puck over the glass by one of the Allstars. It still sits proudly on his shelf.

The guy in front of us had something to do with the team so at one of the breaks, someone came up to him and handed him a couple of pucks for him to give to us - they were still wet from the ice, which amused my husband as he bought a puck at the Preds store.

The lady sitting next to me must have loved her hockey, she sat down, turned to me and asked about a particular player and something about their practice and what jerseys did they wear. Me: Some guys came out in white, iced around in circles and shot a few balls in the net thing. She *tsssk* at me and didnt say another word for the entire game.

Too funny! I can break it down into the simplest analogy: Ice Hockey is like playing AFL with the blunt end of a pool cue on a cold, wet mirror. There are almost no rules and the refs are there for decoration.

You know what they say:. "I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out"

Re: Anyone here going to Virgin invited Ice Hockey Canada/USA match in Sydney June 16

Went to last years in Perth and the game was very tame .... more like a NAB cup game, but had some great memorabilia for sale

Re: Anyone here going to Virgin invited Ice Hockey Canada/USA match in Sydney June 16

I did reply YES to RSVP and it then transpired that one needed to meet OUTSIDE at Sydney Olympic Park at 5pm for the Virgin hostess and other guests - bitterly cold that night. It finished about 10pm.

I asked if they had a coughtail reception or refreshments etc, sometime during that 5 hours, and was clearly told guests could BUY whatever they wanted from vendors there, and that was the deal.

I assumed it was hosted in some Corporate Box type deal etc, but apparently not? Anyway, 5 hours (plus hour each way travel for me) on a Saturday, I chose to sit at home and watch the Swans AFL and other matches on Foxtel in a nice warm lounge, than get chilly at a hockey game.

I asked a Canadian friend who is Hockey mad if these were the top guys, and he laughed and said there were NO NFL players among them, just kids on try out lists etc, and so on, all up for an end of season junket to oz. i.e. the C or D teams it seemed, from his reply.

The IDEA was good, and be nice to see these things once a year ro so, but if targeted at Platinum flyers, who often spent a great deal of money with Virgin, seems a little cheapskate in the actual concept and implementation. Not even a beer, wine or sandwich all night it appears? Pretty rude really.

I'd be VERY surprised if there were any NFL players in the group ;)

But I get what you're saying, maybe one or two who would actually get regular ice time at the highest level. I went a couple years ago and it's very much an exhibition atmosphere, and there's very little defence played.
