Hi,

Was wondering if anyone had used this for car rental insurance. Was it easy to claim? and is activation based on a certain amount of spend? for car rental specifically. The PDS doesn't actually say, hence, could be zero spend cover but that might be too optimistic.

Thanks for your advice :)

Never claimed on it, but afaik there is nothing you need to do to activate it - holding the card is enough.

To activate the rental car insurance in Australia you need to use your card for the rental according to this document https://www.anz.com.au/personal/credit-cards/using/premium-insurance/. However, that requirement is not stipulated on page 54 of the document linked below.

To activate the international travel insurance you need to put $250 in pre-departure travel expenses on the card. For details see page 16 of https://www.anz.com.au/content/dam/anzcomau/documents/pdf/premium-cards-insurances.pdf

Seems like whoever wrote that webpage did not read the PDS. According to the PDS (which is all that matters), simply being a) a card-holder and b) a permanent resident of Australia is all you need to activate the cover.

Agreed. I have messaged via account mail service to see what they say. Would be good to know If there was a time frame for lodgement as well.

Got a copy and paste response. I had 3 specific questions and none of them were answered. .... sigh...

I spoke to ANZ who put my through to QBE who look after the insurance.

Without asking they told me I didn't need to make any purchase on the card for the car insurance in Australia to be activated.

Thanks for this. I'm weighing up whether to cancel this card, St George Amplify and/or Westpac Altitude.
Has anybody done a comparison of the travel insurance policies what's covered (especially car rentals) and the required spend to active them?

I'd imagine they'd all be reasonably similar. Will have a look myself at some point soon, just hoping somebody has already done the hard work!

Cheers

The rental car insurance provided through Westpac and ANZ is very different!

A quick summary:

Westpac - rental expense must be charged to card (no cover if not primary renter), covers any type of excess (including Single Vehicle Accident (SVA) Excess charged by Hertz and Thrifty), covers most types of vehicles

ANZ - rental expense does not need to be charged to card (helpful if you are not the primary renter), does not provide cover if anything other standard excess is payable (e.g. if you have a single vehicle accident with Hertz or Thrfty and SVA is payable in addition to the standard excess, ANZ provides no cover at all, so don't use for Hertz or Thrifty rentals!).

I think there are other differences, but can't recall at the moment.

You might to search some of my numerous posts on this subject.

Didn't know this....thanks...always in the fine print eh

I definitely agree the Westpac rental car coverage is far superior, however AdMEL could you point out where in Westpac's PDS is states that car hire needs to be charged to card? I can only find this requirement for activation of overseas travel insurance cover.

Ouch! I thought it was solid cover :( - Might have to use my normal amex for travel in future! - Travel insurance with decent cover is too much $$$ in comparision to what you would pay in Europe.

I've reread the PDS and you're right, it doesn't, which is interesting because I was sure it did. It must've changed when the insurer was changed from Zurich to QBE.

It's reasonable cover, but Westpac is better.

I have had westpac earth black cards for many years and there never has been a requirement to change the rental to the card for either Zurich or new QBE insurance. Just $500 in travel expenses (per person) plus return ticket originating in Australia. I assume this would be the same for all westpac platinum CC TIs? YMMV.
