I normally try to use cash overseas to avoid fees but decided to use my ANZ QFF VISA for an AUD $728 hotel bill. I got the hotel to charge me in AUD to avoid ANZ conversion rates but they still found a way to hit me with a fee.

This is the fee that ANZ hit me with.

INCL OVERSEAS TXN FEE 21.23 AUD

What is the best card for OS??

extracta, you have the same hassle as many of us. I used to use my ANZ Qantas and American Express Qantas cards: but with the transaction fees, these have become untenable.

As many have noted online here, and which I now use mysedlf, the Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard is one of the very best: no transaction fees for overseas use; very very close to exchange rates of the day; and, despite the official line, you can send it into credit and therefore use your own money.

NAB gold debit visa is not pricey at all

NAB gold and Wizard* are acknowledged on this forum as generally the cheapest ways of obtaining money overseas for the general punter.

Note the "Wizard" is fee free, unlike the NAB Gold facility requires $5K per month to go through your bank account [to be fee free].

By choosing to be billed in AUD whilst overseas you fell into the Dynamic Currency Conversion trap. You may have avoided the ANZ fee but you got hit with the conversion fee from the hotel and its bank. No doubt this is what shows on your statement. Usually that fee is higher than what is charged by Australian banks.

Actually, you would get hit both ways - a poor DCC rate and you don't avoid the ANZ Fee:

ANZ will charge 3% of the value of any foreign or
Australian currency transaction charged to ANZ
Visa, ANZ MasterCard or ANZ Visa PAYCARD
credit card where the merchant or financial
institution accepting the card is located outside
of Australia.

which out of both the nab gold visa and the 28 degrees cards give you the best overall exchange rate?
