Just received a txt - Congratulations! You are Australia's winner of the day.....go to web site "apple.au.mobilegiveawayinsanity.com" I have 24hrs to claim.

This is a scheme/hoax/honeytrap, right?

The URL screams phishing expedition. Apple isn't in the habit of giving things away. Run for it!

Just google that name.I had a similiar one about a month ago-found out that yes I would get an Ipad but my mobile phone bill would suddenly rise horrendously by the reports I found.

"Apple giveaways" are a favourite of scammers! Generally you just have to do a google of the message or a reverse ip address search.

Scam.

You will be asked to complete several challenges. And then you might be able to redeem for an ix.

Total scam though. It probably won't arrive.

Does the website/link not give it away..............................

So a little like those "congratulations you're our 1,000,000 winner" that you get on sites like this one:!:

It's worked, I've just signed up for AFF gold membership - releasing me from all those pesky advertisements & winner messages:D

Not everyone understands the way URL's are made up, with the bit before the dot com being the crucial tell in this URL. I'm sure my neighbour would fall for it.

Well your neighbour is a fool.... Perhaps they should watch more today tonight/ACA for some more quality education.....

Some people shouldn't be allowed on the internet I guess

Being unable to decipher a URL would hardly make someone a fool. Just not as computer literate as others.
I can't knit, does that make me a fool?

I suppose you're putting me in the same category!

It was posted in the playground.....no big deal.

No it does not, and the knitting analogy is not relevant!

If someone is using the internet, they should have a basic level of knowledge that you are not suddenly going to win a Free $900 device, nor are you going to get $50,000,000 from a Nigerian man.

Teaching the basics of the internet, and basic safety precautions before throwing someone on the net should be mandatory

I have helped quite a few people get up and running on the internet and with emails etc.. People in their 70's and 80's who know to never give out personal information, and to not click in unsolicited links in emails, and it's always safer to type out a website address than click on a link that may or may not take you to the what appears to be the destination address.

That, and NEVER give out personal details via email, or unless it's on a reputable website indicated by the httpS or a well known organisation like Apple or Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles, Coupons and More Online Shopping | eBay or Commonwealth Bank - Personal Banking, Business Banking and Corporate Banking - Commonwealth Bank Group etc etc

The very simple fact that the website the OP has mentioned is "mobilegiveawayinsanity.com" should be enough of a warning to anyone using the internet.

If not, asking a friend/family member, or on here is the right thing to do :) as per below

I suppose you're putting me in the same category!

Nope, you have asked about it, hopefully before clicking on the link and giving them the requested information :)

Yeah received this sms last year.

Since the iphone came out, it has been a favourite of scammers for their phoney giveaways.
