Hi Everyone,

A few of you may remember last year when I took my LEGO 35,000 piece QF s A380 to the USA, time for a bit of an update on one of my latest projects.

Today I submitted my first ever entry to the Archibald portrait competition at the Art gallery of New South Wales.

My piece is a portrait of Daniel Grollo the CEO of Grocon.
He was a great subject and was really cool to agree to the sitting and was a great guy to chat to. (and he is quite the Frequent Flyer!)

Entitled: "the building of the builder"
Its about 20,000 LEGO pieces give or take its 1.7m high and 1.2m wide.
It took around about 40 hours to complete.

I'm 100% sure it wont make the list of finalists, but it was an awesome process to do and I had a blast making it!

Excuse the poor lighting of the picture but enjoy a sneak AFF peak!

Very impressive ReLoad! I have no idea how it will go in the comp but I like it. If it misses the official prizes, there's always the Packing Room Prize (or whatever it's called) voted by the guys who set the displays up!

Very nice.
Did you do the "painting" by hand, or digitise a photo into squares, then use a map?

Also be interested in why you chose Daniel as the subject.
Those stories are often as interesting as the artwork

I prefer to, and only work by hand, there is software out there that you can use, but IMHO they are never nearly as good looks wise, they also to me at least totally defeat the purpose of something such as this.

I drew the outlines and features out in pencil first and worked backwards filling in spaces, using many pictures as references as Daniel wasn't around.

I chose Daniel, because of what I do as a professional builder, even though my medium is LEGO, and his is real world construction supplies in essence we are still both builders.
hence: "The building of the builder". As it turns out i was lucky as he was a heck of a nice guy and more than willing to give up his time.

Excellent work, love it. If Dobell can win, you must be in with a chance. ;)

Lego as a method of creating a portrait, interesting. I like it.

I thought the A380 would have been the pinnacle of your brick building efforts and put you off the medium for life, specially after AA's accident during transport.
