Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone could tell me how the upgrades system works. I want to upgrade a SIN-AMS sector. This is aboard a 777-200/200ER which qualifies for saver rewards. Basically what I am asking is does anyone ever get their upgrade confirmed upon application or are they all waitlisted.

Thanks

My experience is purely on SIN<-->TPE/BKK/NRT/HKG/MEL, and hopefully it will help you out.

When I am booked in Y, I tend to travel mid-week. That gives me the BEST chance to score upgrade. When I apply for J Saver Upgrade, I get the confirmation straight away no waitlist.

Further, I tend to do a dummy Redemption Booking on the flights I want use J Saver Upgrade on first before I book any Y fares. I always ensure that J Saver is NOT waitlisted.

Good luck.

If there is availability at the time of "appication", it will be confirmed immediately.
(None of the QF nonsense.)
If not, you will be waitlisted, and if more savers are released (or existing bookings cancelled), you may be successful.

Thanks very much for the information. Very handy doing the dummy booking to see whats available.

Qantas pfft. Great for domestic reward tickets but international upgrades SQ everytime.

Thanks to both for your prompt replies. Don't quite know how, also managed to get a SIN-SYD Economy flight for 27500 one way.

What are people experiences with flight redemptions using Kris Flyer miles?

Lets say I want to book a return business class ticket from Melbourne to Hong Kong one week before the Xmas holiday (lets say Dec 23), are they easy to book?

I am prepared to use my miles to book the Business Standard Award ticket (which require much more miles than the saver ones).

Hopefully the seats won't run out by the time I book in late June? The last time I check all the seats are still available for that particular week.

What are people's experiences for bookings just before Xmas, do they run out quickly? How far away can I still book them?

Many thanks

Just before Christmas esp the week before Christmas, is the busiest travel time of the year, whether revenue or redemption. If you see availability now for the dates and classes you want, you should book immediately.

Thanks for your reply. I wish I could book now, but just that my miles don't add up until late June. Hopefully by then (still 6 months away from actual travel), I can still secure my seats.

Ah I see. What works in your favour is that you are willing to go Bz Standard (much more availability there), but MEL-HKG is a potential waitlist on 2 sectors.
I'd say, IMHE only, that your chances are good in June.
It also helps greatly if you have any status at all with SQ.

Thanks deluxeflyer, I am actually new to Krisflyer, and have never redeemed any flights with them.

Once I get the required miles (153,000 for myself and my wife combined), I am happy just to book a one way ticket from Melb to HK during that Dec week, since you say they are so hard to get as the time gets closer.

I am using ANZ rewards Visa to accumulate Kris Flyer miles, as I don't fly often with them actually.

My only experience with SQ was last Dec when I travelled on Biz class with them from Melb to HK, the service and the large leather seats are fantastic!

Happy to go with them again!

2 redemptions make it a little more difficult, but I still think your chances are good in June.

ANZ Rewards Visa is not so rewarding, you must have a lot of expenditure coming up to get the requisite KF miles (more than 300K on Visa!). OT but unavoidable, have you considered the Westpac KF Visa/Amex Platinum combo? Check out the AFF thread, they have an offer of 20K KF miles for new approvals, the amex earns 1.5KF miles per AUD, and the Visa earns 1:1. You'll get the points/miles much sooner than ANZ.

To be honest, I did apply for the Westpac Kris Flyer card, but my application got rejected, because they weren't happy with my tax return, weird stuff!

Thankfully ANZ launched the new Rewards Visa, and the first 3 months they give away double reward points, and so with a bit of luck, I may get the required miles in June.

I checked Asia Miles and Qantas, and they got no reward seats left in Dec for biz class, as expected.
