Considering a done4 out of JNB possibly but was wondering if some of the legs would be upgradeable to F ?
Are upgrades allowed within the rules ?

I would probably earn J SCs and points but still possibly worth it for longer legs.
Thoughts ?

Assuming you mean upgrade using QFF points, then you can request upgrades on legs that are operated by Qantas.

.. & those operated by AA with AA flight numbers although domestically, you should be booked into first anyway.

And if you meant paying to upgrade specific segments to F, then no - Oneworld Explorer fare conditions 11.C.4 says "Upgrading by sector to Business/First class is not permitted."

Its definitely possible. Mrs Batesy & I upgraded with points SYD-SFO to first as part of our DONE4 on QF metal J-F in 2007.
I had not told her we were flying first as it was the first leg of our honeymoon. She was grumpy at me for going to the F check in at SYD until she realized what was going on. First experience in F and the new Flounge had only recently opened. The agent that checked us in is the lady thats in the online tour of the lounge.

To echo Serfty any domestic sector on AA that does not have J you should be booked in F.
Some longer domestic AA flights have J, but majority of shorter sectors in USA is in F.

Hmmmmmm did the rules recently change ?

That rule refers to paid upgrades - those done with real $$$.

You need to upgrade the entire booking, rather than individual segments. (This is distinct from paying "per segment" to upgrade to Premium Economy on a LONEx - which is permissible.)

I've never asked an airline about it and been told no, but it is what the fare conditions say. I assume Batesy was referring to a point upgrade, although maybe they were allowed in the past.

From http://www.oneworld.com/documents/1...er+Rules/cf0529a1-d3e4-48e4-9890-2795deb3dc53, 11.C) Upgrading

1) An Economy class oneworld Explorer fare may be upgraded to a higher tiered or First/Business class oneworld Explorer fare without fee.
2) A Business class oneworld Explorer fare may be upgraded to a higher tiered or First class oneworld Explorer fare without fee.
3) A First Class oneworld Explorer fare may be upgraded to a higher tiered oneworld Explorer fare without fee.
4) Upgrading by sector to Business/First class is not permitted.
5) At any time the oneworld Explorer fare may be used as credit towards payment of any higher fare from the point of origi n provided the conditions of the higher fare have been met. No fee will apply. Where such credit is towards a nother Explorer fare, retroactive use will be permitted. Reissued tickets must be endorsed --NON REF/ xx_-- (xx_ equals oneworld Explorer fare basis code) and the original Non-Refundable amount remains Non-Refundable. If the upgraded ticket is subsequently cancelled, the original fee will apply.

As indicated, that is in reference to paying $$$ on your booking to upgrade - the whole section is realted to booking changes and if the original fare can be used as credit to a higher cost oneworld product.

The rules existed certainly in 2007 and likely earlier - I am checking this. FlyerTalk Forums - View Single Post - The oneworld explorer ticket FAQs

Since then I have had two LONE4 where we have travelled SYD-JFK, LAX-xORD-FCO, BOS-MIA-DFW-SEA in first/business, just to name a few.

I updated my first post to specify that I had used points to upgrade J-F on QF SYD-SFO in 2007.

Probably superfluous but I upgraded to F on two legs of a DONE4 in 2010 (one using QF points and one using AA miles).

Lol I had to use google define to work out what superfluous meant !

Hopefully somebody has done it or tried and was unsuccessful more recently as I'm keen to get a definitive current answer to this.

A tad off topic, but intra-USA (domestic) sectors flown as part of a dONEx are booked into F aren't they ?
Will they credit as F points/SCs or as J ?

I seem to have made the answers confusing with my comments - I meant to point out that you can't upgrade them for cash, as opposed to with points which opusman noted in his earlier post. I don't think anyone has mentioned an example of not being able to upgrade with points.

My original question (though unclear now when I read it again) was about upgrades using points/miles.
Not sure what kind of "upgrading" the terms and conditions you posted refer to.

I think it works like this - if its a two class flight (F and Y) and you're booked onto AA then you'll sit in F and get F SCs and points. If it's 3 class (F, J and Y) then you'll sit in J and get J SCs and points. The one to watch is a two class flight where you book onto (for example) the QF codeshare. In this case you'll sit in F but will only get J SCs and points ( but you will get the magic ~)

We have upgraded D-F on SYD-LAX using mrsdrron's QF points in 2012 and on an AA flight DFW-NRT using my AA points in 2011.The upgrades were for the 2 of us.
