Are room upgrades essentially finished for HH Golds?

I didn't want to derail the main "how does Hilton treat elites" thread, but I will reference a recent post I made there:

http://www.australianfrequentflyer....do-hilton-treat-you-18502-161.html#post726313

In that thread I say "I've been pretty lucky" in relation to upgrades recently, despite many many reports starting to roll in of meagre or no upgrade from other AFFers. In fact, whilst I may have been "lucky" in some respects, with relation to room upgrades, no, I've not been lucky for some time ... since around May 2012 actually now that I think about it.

Checked into the Hilton KL last night, it reminded me that I've been getting the same tired old line from SYD, MEL, KCH and now KUL... no mention of an upgraded room during the check-in process which then forces me to raise it with them ... and I give them a chance to do it themselves, always give them my gold card and wait until the check-in conversation is coming to its natural end and the room card/key is being handed to me.

So, last night I again had to ask... no upgrades available? No sir, sorry, the hotel is full. I pressed a bit more, and probably looked pretty disappointed (I felt pretty darn disappointed). So I asked if I could keep the room I had already been allocated but gain Exec lounge access ... which I realise is really only a diamond bennie ... yes, that was fine....

So, a good news tale for me, I do always manage to get into the exec lounge for my stays and this _is_ important to me, its really what I meant when I said in the thread linked above that I thought I was still getting "lucky".

So went up to the room, which is lovely by the way, but no way on earth is it a "preferred room", its simply the room I booked and paid for. Opened the laptop and had a look at the booking site. Its wide open, pretty much every room they sell is available, including several types of executive room and other variations on the room I have for a few sheckles more which provide higher floor level or better view.

So its obvious, to me anyway, golds are still being recognised, my stays have been good (particularly KCH), I'm getting into the lounge, and this is a big win for me personally, breakfasts are free and usually good, etc, etc, I don't want to appear ungrateful as I realise I'm outside the guaranteed bennie list...

However, GM welcome cards seem to be gone, small trinkets /chocolates at turn down appear to be gone (even turn downs seem to have gone at some properties), and the much enjoyed (previously) exec level room upgrades, even now that they have morphed into 'preferred room' upgrades, appear to be gone... at least for me as a gold. Perhaps Golds will still benefit from this type of upgrade if the hotel oversells the lower end rooms? Who knows.

Looking at the other thread it appears to me that those folks who are still getting room upgrades appear to be mainly diamonds. Thats fine, I don't begrudge them their bennies at all. Diamond is no trivial status level to achieve and, as written, offers really quite few official benefits over gold.

But it saddens and disappoints me that behind the scenes, whether by direction or omission, the written bennies for gold appear to be slipping.

Its been suggested that probably part of the reason is the plethora of golds around now, given freebie gold attainment all over the place. Probably true. Gold is the new silver ... much like credit cards are all pushing towards platinum for even basic service level cards.

Before I nip off this afternoon I'm going to have a snoop at the Le Meridien property which is the sister building and shares many of the facilities of the Hilton in KL. SPG is beckoning me ... I wonder if they'd status match?

IMHO the Hilton KL is a better property than Le Meridien.

SPG does not do a status match anymore. Although you could get SPG Gold (upgrades unlikely) with Amex Charge.
You could however do a SPG platinum challenge.

Look some good points raised here.

Why don't you just buy club rooms on agoda or similar sites as chasing hotel status is very hit and miss re benefits?

I must be one of the lucky ones as I've had an upgrade on every single stay this year as a Gold, including many from base room to some of the best suites (properties all over the world)
Not sure if it helps that they can see heaps of future bookings in the system against my profile also.

Hmm. Interesting. I've got a couple of bookings made as Platinum but I'll probably be Gold by the time they come around.

Wonder what benefits I'll get?

Im staying at the Hilton KL now, checked in Sat night. Ended up with a King Exec Room. I had a King Deluxe booked. Not sure if its the same room just with exec lounge. Off to DXB today.

Family is staying at Le Meridian and agree the Hilton smashes it! Le Meridian needs to refurbish the rooms.. from what ive seen they have already done the foyer.

This was my experience when I first became a gold, every stay was an upgrade to at least an executive version of the room I actually booked. But this was prior to the "preferred room" changes. I rarely booked more then one stay in advance.

Now I'm booked up to the end of 1st qtr next year and have will also have done the base points required to retain gold next year ... so anyone looking at history or future will see what looks like a good solid loyal gold performer ... so one wonders if forward bookings matter. Maybe it matters to have forward bookings at the actual hotel you are hoping to get an upgrade at?

I think it has more to do with the hotels in the region getting weary of the plethora of DJ sourced (nee QF) Diamonds and Gold that have germinated in the last 12 months or so.

The have been ebbs and flows over the years - until late 2007, Diamonds and Golds at properties outside of North America were not even guaranteed breakfast (let alone lounge access for Diamonds).

Well thats really interesting. Perhaps I'm wrong then, it might be luck of the draw or maybe they have an upgrade quota, and once thats filled, thats it. First in, first served so to speak.

I got in late, it was getting close to midnight on Saturday just gone (15th), I also booked a King Deluxe, and a King Deluxe is what I got. The Deluxe room has an entry foyer/lounge space with a couch and TV, mini bar, computer desk and whatnot with a separate bedroom and a large separate bathroom ... its essentially a mini suite. The exec room (that I saw when I asked for a tour) are higher up, better view, but don't have the separate lounge.

I'm pretty happy with it tbh. I know it sounds like I'm whinging, but its not a whinge, not really, I got a good room and exec lounge, I'm happy enough ... but I worry, because thats who I am (haha) about what it means when businesses start slipping on their stated written guidelines and rules.

I wonder if writing to a property the day before, or a few days before, to inquire about the gold (or diamond if you are one) bennies one can expect at the hotel upon arrival ... essentially give them a heads up that yes, I'm that guy, and I'm gonna notice if the status benefits don't flow through?

Too much DYKWIA??

[EDIT: Oops, actually, I booked and received a King Deluxe Plus room.

The "plus" must be the separate lounge thing. The thought occurs, maybe this is what my problem is? Last time I booked a base room I got an exec level upgrade. But I have, for the last several stays, booked a few rungs up from base ... mainly because I like the room description (book what you'd be happy with) but also thinking that one step up has to be exec level ... yet I've not been granted that 'one step up' on any occasion I've done this]

Its a plan I'll investigate I think. I've not used an aggregator for hotel bookings in a long time. Whats the general feeling on discount level? 10%? 50%? I'm not going to dismiss the idea thats for sure. I've put a temporary halt on 2013 bookings as I nut a few things out in light of Hiltons new adjusted qualification levels.

I have essentially gone down this route with airline bookings now. I pretty much try for BFOD in J, which, surprisingly enough, can very often be only a small premium on Flexi Y if you hunt around. Domestically I zip about on points or p+p upgrades - end result, I've got no status with anyone, but I'm in J two thirds of the time anyway so it actually doesn't matter.

An interesting thread.

FWIW, I've had maybe 4 stays this year at HSW and only 2 of those times I've been given an Exec Room above the standard guest room. The other 2 times I have been told they were full (Once they actually were).I still had access to the Exec lounge. As long as I get access to the lounge for breakfast I'm normally pretty happy.

I stayed at Hilton Paris La Defense earlier this year and booked a rate around $100AUD and was upgraded to a Relaxtion suite and was looked after very well.

Interesting to note that I am silver with Club Carlson and have recieved room upgrades with my last 3 stays at their properties. Once even on a F+F rate. :D

KL Hilton checkin are liars. I looked at my booking in the morning on Saturday and my KING DELUXE LAKE VIEW had been changed to GRAND EXECUTIVE SUITE. When I arrived they told me, I had been upgraded to a KING EXECUTIVE PLUS. I said, what happened to my suite? She claimed when I told her my booking had been showing grand exec suite earlier.... she lied to me that the suites are full (available for booking online) and also lied to me that my booking had been ALWAYS a king executive plus.

do they take me for a fool? i actually stormed off after giving her the look from hell... not much else I could do

this gets to the bottom of the philosophy of AFF. It is one of the fascinating things...watching how we each play our own game within the big game. And sharing and learning.
I am currently playing the Qantas status game and loving it. But as others have said if you can get J or F flights with ASAs with Qantas or plain points on Qantas or elsewhere does status matter? At the moment I think it does. Later I may change my mind.

I used to be a big user of Wotif and other web based aggregators but am now exploring the hotel based systems. I am not quite so convinced about these as I am the airline ones. But will bash away at it for a year or two to see how it pans out. If nothing else I can transfer some credit card points to the hotels and get some free nights. I have Qantas FF points coming out of my ears...about 900,000 in the family, so it's good to have something else to do with cc points.

Thanks to all who contribute to my education here

I lost my love for hhonors in 2007.Was diamond for 7 years.Always qualified on stays, nights and points. In 2007 on several occasions was not granted exec lounge access as diamond.KL pushed me over the edge.Because of my experiences I booked the exec floor.Received 1 of the 2 small rooms next to the lift(my profile has always said away from lifts).
Next day we met a couple we knew-HH gold who had booked in after us and been upgraded to a better exec room than ours.I therefore spoke to the lounge staff and front desk who then said sorry it cant be done as hotel is full. You know the story-checked availability.
So since we have stayed at Le meridien.Always a suite and we can use the pool and restaurants at the hilton so for us a much better proposition.

Until August 2007, neither lounge access or complimentary breakfast were guaranteed for HHonors Diamond at properties outside North America.

Since then it has been possible for a HHonors Diamond to have such access guaranteed for a stay at a Hilton with an operating lounge either by MyWay selection or more recently simply by booking.

In the context of this thread I believe as per my earlier post that there has been an influx of Oz based Diamond guests at Oz Hiltons due to the Velocity status match.

This should alleviate itself over the next year or so.

Do you take this up with the duty manager? If not you should. The checkin clerk is virtually powerless.
