The reason I ask is that on QF78 (SIN-PER) on 10 Dec the must have been more than half a dozen OpUps. Enough so that the FA commented we had 6 meal choices instead of just the 3 on the menu.

Yes I was one of the lucky ones (2nd time in two weeks) again having had a T->J (MEL-PER) two weeks ago as a result of the ground accident at Avalon.

Pity QF won't put priority tags on the luggage as it took well more than half an hour for the bag to appear in PER and by then a meaningful part of the EK flight had collected their bags and overrun the customs checking. OTOH the Biz tagged bags were out in the first lot and could not have filled a baggage container in the hold.

Wondering

Fred

I think QF would have some contingency to cover for a certain percentage of op-ups or upgrade requests. Although that said you may not necessarily get your choice of meal on every flight.

Why don't they put priority bag tags on your luggage as an AA Executive Platinum, Oneworld Emerald? Is this happening in all airports? If I have noticed that the check-in person has not put a priority bag tag on my luggage I quietly remind them to do so....

Alas only PLT at the time. And I did not see any priority tags among the biz class bags.

As ExpPLT - singapore checkin is usually pretty thorough...... though it has been awhile.....

Priority Luggage handling is not a OneWorld benefit; QF just offers it to its own members

With QF status on a non QF flight, then there should be no expectation of priority handling based on status

So I must be extremely lucky for CX and BA to place first class priority tags on my luggage most times....

No CX just appreciates status flyers from the OW alliance who travel with them and they treat them the same as their own elites. BA similar but perhaps not as obviously, given that the BA FF program is elite status rather than CC spend oriented (like QF)

But that's opinion and I wander

Fred

PS Dave it is/was AA status on a QF flight and still leaves the question of why 6-10 OpUps

If you get priority handling , then that is something that the airline is just doing but is not a One World benefit; e.g. do not expect it on an AA international flight unless in J/F

Tis the season for op-ups. School holidays and vacation travel at this time of year often leaves the business class cabin with plenty of spare seats and economy is full. So they can sell more economy seats to fulfil the demand and upgrade some people to the comfy seats.

On almost any other airline I would consider the OPups policy a no-brainer but --- with QF and its history of flying J seats empty even when FFers will offer miles for the upgrades.............

Are we beginning to see the start of a "practical" QF?

No, I don't see any difference in their policy. in recent years, QF has not upgraded people just because their are spare seats in the premium cabins. However, if they have empty business class seats and a full economy cabin, they will upgrade people in order to sell more economy class seats. And at this time of year they are no always expecting to seel all the business class seats so they are willing to "over sell" economy knowing they have J seats available.

In fact, they will often pool the available J and Y seat buckets, such that they may have already sold all the Y seats but have a number of J seats available. The reservation system may then show all those remaining seats as available in both the Y and J buckets. Then a seat sold in either class will decrement the availability in both classes.
