Are VA's scales 'right'?

Here's a conundrum. Bags for myself and another skier were weighed by Southwest at Reno at 51-70 pounds, and we were charged a $50 excess each. We land in LA and removed some items into our carry on. We check in to VA at 2.30pm where the bags are weighed by Daniel and he says the checked bags are nearly 80 pounds each. Huh? Southwest's scales and their printed receipt, showing the weight range of 51-70 lbs, are wrong?

Then at Starbucks in the terminal another group of passengers with Tim M. in row 40-something, complained about being hit with surprise excess baggage by Daniel and Angela.

Whilst the excess was only $50, maybe someone at VA in LA could look into their scales because its not good for business to impose surprise excess charges particularly when there were flight-day changes which added hotel etc fees.

I asked Fair Trading' in WA to check the QF scales as I believed they were uncalibrated in Perth, once when I was charged excess.

Not sure of the outcome.

But do ask to see the last calibration certificate.

I always carry a portable device that is very accurate and handy.

I asked Fair Trading' in WA to check the QF scales as I believed they were uncalibrated in Perth, once when I was charged excess.

The old scales in Perth (at the checkin/bagdrop, before the NGCI days) used to have the calibration stickers fixed to them. Haven't looked at the new scales closely enough to see if they have them.

I'm sure CrazyDave will get VA in LA to check their scales or check if the staff correctly read the terms. It can't be good for business when people sitting at Starbucks/Burger King in the departure lounge are all wondering why they were charged $50 at LAX for the same gear they just flew into LAX with.
