[TD]Information on your flight
Dear MR MARKIS10
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast storms in SYD this afternoon. Your Virgin Australia flight may be delayed or cancelled. We will work as quickly as possible to have guests safely on their way. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Kind Regards,

I've received similar texts from VA, which were quite helpful. It meant I could try to get to the airport earlier and try to get on an earlier flight.

I got it yesterday flying back to SYD from MEL - Armageddon is about right:

-Lounge announcements for "anyone on Sydney flights after 730 to come forward for rebooking"
-Indefinite boarding delay
-30min holding pattern
-1000 ppl waiting for cabs at T2

My first thought was that's the message meant for yesterday afternoon.

I think it will apply quite nicely for today too:
MORE THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP ON THE BLUE MOUNTAINS THIS AFTERNOON
AND STEER TOWARDS THE AIRPORT DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
AND A CARBON COPY FOR TOMORROW (AGAIN).

THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL WITHIN THE TMA:
80% CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS WITHIN SYDNEY AIRPORT TMA TODAY 00/12Z.
30% CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS WITHIN 5NM OF SYDNEY AIRPORT TODAY
04/10Z.

And the TAF:
PROB30 TEMPO 0404/0410 VRB25G35KT 3000 THUNDERSTORMS WITH MODERATE
RAIN SCT010 SCT045CB
PROB30 TEMPO 0504/0506 VRB25G35KT 3000 THUNDERSTORMS WITH MODERATE
RAIN SCT010 SCT045CB

Yep METAR reports distant tops observed already and a buildup is evident over Warragamba and a bigger formation over Mudgee.

I got one of those messages last week when Perth AP got hit by a big storm in the afternoon. Cancelled flight, boarding screens all wrong, absolute chaos. Customers told (verbally) to organise their accommodation (waiting for that one to end in a argument ...) Problem was I received that SMS 5 hours after the event at MIDNIGHT....well at least VA tried

It's a hard life! I hope you get home without too much trouble.

They moved me to the 1840 flight and have screwed me on the seat. Not sure 90 minutes early is worth this cough. But at least the staff members have their BPs for business.

I also received a warning text msg re: possible dissruption. I was to tvl CBR-SYD-MEL due to an oversight when booking cheapest fare, though the extra points are always welcome. Then a second msg said to see Lounge staff on arrival at CBR or service desk if I had bags for check in. I had already checked in via mobile so I assume they could see this.
On arrival early I was advised that a seat had been held for me on the direct service if I would prefer as it would avoid going through SYD.

I accepted of course, and must have had a stunned look on my face, as the agent went on to explain that they were looking ahead to try and avoid movements through SYD if they could be avoided.

I have never seen this sort of forward thinking, especially from VA, most impressive. ( A pleasant change from ending up stuck somewhere without warning.)

Hi medhead,
what do you mean by the staff members? How do you know they are staff?
TQ

I'm not going to engage in an argument with you. Just remember sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

But on domestic it is fairly easy to spot staff after a 100 or so flights a year. In this case the conversation and staff luggage gave it away.

Hi medhead,
Ii wasnt interested in any argument. I was simply wondering how you pick staff travellers? I seem to recall a friend of mine years ago with staff benefits, and I'm sure he told me that staff were to remain very quiet, and respectful while travelling.

TQ

Seems my memory is even more cough than ever. I mistakenly thought you'd been very defensive of staff travel in the past. My mistake.

The guys were quiet and respectful. Most people wouldn't know they were staff. This was also in the gate lounge not on the aircraft.

No problem medhead.
Maybe I was....but guess what....my memory is cough too. Especially after a long day at work, and now lounging in the cool breeze with wine in hand.
my question today was purely intrigue.

TQ
