I've just booked one of these and I found that you need to book flights on 2 or 3 airlines or the total will be much more than 280,000, say if you stuck with Qantas the whole way.

Welcome to AFF, Anna. The way I understand it from talking to a QF CSO on 13 11 31, the 280 000 points is a business class RTW ticket. This only allows 5 sectors. I had planned a trip for next year which went:

SYD - HKG (QF)
HKG - DXB (CX)
DXB - LHR (BA)
LHR - YUL (BA) These are four of the sectors that I would include. The next 4 sectors I would pay for myself and fly economy since they are being operated by AA, and apart from one are basically short haul.

YUL - ORD
ORD - AUS (because my youngest daughter lives there)
AUS - SFO
SFO - HNL

The last sector I would count as one of the five on points.

HNL - SYD (QF)

Wow I'm new here and I have come to realize that I need to brush up on my airport call signs. SYD is Sydney, BKK is bangkok.....

let the studying begin

These awards can have up to 16 sectors.

They are limited to 5 stopovers.

A transfer is basically a change of flight of less than 24 hours (or a surface segment).
