Qantas currently has fairly good award availability on flights between Sydney and Santiago in Premium Economy.

There's also a decent amount of LATAM Airlines availability in Economy & Business on flights between Australia, New Zealand and South America.

Hi, at the end of the article it is stated that you do not need a Chilean visa if you are transiting and do not leave the airport. As I understand it, if your transit exceeds 8 hours (even if you stay airside) or you have to recheck your baggage for an onward flight (if it is not checked through to the final destination), then you will need a Chilean visa. The visa cannot be done when you arrive at the airport but can be done in advance online and does not cost anything if you are transiting.

Thanks for the article. When you talk about the domestic connecting flight for no extra points, is that done via multi-city at the time of booking?

I just booked these now - 2 pax business class MEL to SCL for late Nov.

However, the Qantas manage bookings does not allow me to book my seats. I appreciate this is with Latam airlines - does anyone know if I can contact either Qantas or Latam to arrange seats?

Ring Qantas and ask them for the Latam reservation code (it won’t be the same as your Qantas reservation code). Then go onto the Latam website and use the code in the “Manage you booking” section. From there you can select your seats.

You can also use rj.com to select seats in my experience.

Thanks for this tip, have secured J in April/May 2023 to realise my partners long term ambition to visit South America. We couldn’t get J from Sydney so we will go to AKL in Y and have a couple of nights there, then continue on to SCL with the long leg in J. Return is straight through in LA J.

Thanks again!

sorry but by 5 Sept. when I saw this these flights almost seemed imaginary. Yes I could get J reward SYD_MEL or via CBR to SCL on LATAM c.10Oct but coming back 2 wks later or so absol NADA in rewards. And as for QF, forget it totally (which is usual)

Nabbed some for Feb/Mar the other day (when LHR/FCO and US opened up). Beware the premium cabin still has the blocked seats for LA PAX - so even 4/5 months out, slim pickings in the J cabin. The return flight we nabbed 3A and 3K but now we only get “Window or Aisle” ie there aren‘t two other seats available to select (even as WP). T-80 should see all empty seats open up….

OT, but there’s also some more availability SYD-JNB (including 2x F seats on some days).
