That LTG finishing line is in sight and I should cross it in the next few weeks! And then it's hello BAEC! But this is what I'm most looking forward to...
1. Flying MH in J and earning J credits/tier points!
2. Flying other OneWorld partners and earning the full credits/tier points with them as well!
3. Flying JQ (only when I really have to) and not paying extra to earn SCs with QFF!! It was so liberating when I booked a JQ domestic flight last week and didn't have to buy a bundle!

If BAEC is the Holy Grail why waste time with QFF Lifetime Gold?

It depends on how close your are close or old you maybe and when the BAEC light globe comes on. In my case it was later and if I had discovered AFF a couple of years earlier than I did I would have jumped to BA 5 years back and would now be at LT OWE via BA G. That being said I personally do not want to keep up my current travel for the next 5-10 years (I have already cut back) so I will just stick with QF and when I fall back to it LTG. P1 suits me at the moment.

I understand the comment by JohnK. But I also fall into the category of Matt_01 - if I knew what i know now, and if I "had my time again". I would not have invested so much in QF. (maybe :) )

So I completely understand, if someone is close to LTG, that they would continue until they get it.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

I never thought I would even come close to QFF LTG and when partner earn rates were fair, I was happy to stick with QF. However, that changed unfortunately and now I find myself inches away from LTG. Makes sense to just cross that line and then move over to BAEC. If I'd known what I know now, I would have gone with BAEC in the first place and be close to LTP by now. Will I be travelling as much as I am now for the next 10 years? Maybe, maybe not, but I'd be closer to LTP with BA than I would be with QF even when I'm already at LTG with them!

Continuing if close is ok but don't need to exclusively continue crediting to QFF.

BAEC not for everyone.

If I knew then what I know now I'd continue with QFF earning Platinum cheaply each year but wouldn't rush to Lifetime Gold. Too much uncertainty in life to bank airline status just in case it is needed in 20 years time for the 3-4 flights/year.

Airline alliances can change, BA could make enhancements to their program, QF has generous lounge access policies for kids, SG and above get earlier access to QF classic reward seats, can earn QF points easily (e.g. churning QF points earning credit cards), BA lifetime status requires a lot of flying to get any lifetime status. If your flying changes and you don’t reach BA LTG or they enhance it you could be left with nothing.

There are plenty of reasons to stick with QF until getting QF LTG including the above.

Let's not forget that back in the day QFF was far better and rewarding before the various enhancements, "simpler and unfairer" and all the rest where your MH and QR and all would give you decent earn. Those days are gone. BA can (and likely will) change many times. The grass is greener there, and in a few years maybe not. We each need to choose with short, medium and long term goals in mind IMO.

It makes sense being close to LTG to reach that goal - then that is a benefit locked in (hopefully for "life"!) then one is more free to expore other OW options - like BAEC. Plus travel patterns will also determine, to some extent, where one pools points. I mean for me I barely touch the UK, and think I last flew BA like 5 years ago (on an AY codeshare no less) so it wouldn't make much sense to me to pool to BAEC unless I changed my habits and flew them much more - as much as GGL and LTP equivalent seem enticing and maybe possible before I stop travel, it doesn't fit my travel profile right now. That's just me. The OP, and others, may be very different, and it makes sense.

Certainly the way QF/MH as noted by MH-Fan currently "works" is shameful specially for paid J (which I have done) and going to a program that would reward regular travel on MH, and other partners (like QR) where QF give less than stellar credit makes a LOT of sense. With the OWS afford by QFF LTG (how many TLA's can I fit in one sentence :D ) then looking elsewhere makes a LOT of sense!

My other strategy is to maintain status and earning in another major alliance. For me, it's Star and UA - as coughpy as they are I am near to lifetime *G status which - much like the OP's point about QFF LTG is a fallback target. Not only that, but there are far more earning, redemption options across both major alliances to make trips to just about anywhere be earners in one or both alliances. As example a few years ago I took a trip to far eastern Canada (the Maritimes) wherer the only service in is on either WS-with no QF codes or earn at the time, and AC). My trip woumnd up a mix of QF to the US, AA internal and AC from EWR into and out of Canada. That worked out very nicely for both my main earnings accounts. Or another trip I took awards in TG F to get to PRG via MUC and came back on AY/QF - again splitting the difference and making use of both.

Everyone has their own strategy and reasons for the choices - and only each of us can decide on the value - and also take the chance that the strategy we pick will work out the way we hope with ever changing programs

good luck to all!

Please enlighten me, say I am WP and not far off LTG, what's the deal with going with Jetstar when you have no other choice?

If you are booking under the JQ code you can pay extra for the Max(?) bundle to earn SCs. Keep your boarding pass in case you need to put in a missing points claim.

QF codeshares tend to cost more, I think.

mvly, thanks, how did you get away with not paying for a bundle, did it have something to do with your Qantas status?
Last year I had no choice but to take a flight with jetstar Manila to Singapore, on a very busy flight in a three row configuration I had a shadow either side of me in cattle class. Don't know if it had something to do with me being premium, but I didn't ask.

That wasn’t me.

MH_fan knows that LTG is approaching for him. He has concluded that LTP is unrealistic and doesn’t wish to do the flying to retain WP. So MH_fan no longer needs SCs from Jetstar flights. Lifetime Gold provides domestic QANTAS Club and International Business Lounge access.

Personally I try to avoid Jetstar where possible. I usually don’t pay for SCs if I do fly Jetstar as it’s unlikely to be what makes/breaks attaining/retaining status.
