Some friends are flying PDX - LAX on AS connecting with LAX - AKL - Australia on NZ, all in the same reservation. Does anyone know if they will they be able to check their bags all the way through at PDX? Or will they have to collect bags at LAX and re-check?

We flew First AS SEA-(AA codeshare)-LAX connecting to a separately ticketed Air NZ LAX-xAKL-MEL booking. At SEATAC check-in they happily checked our luggage all the way though to MEL.

Our bags came out at MEL among the first Dozen. :D

This was about two years ago.
