Hi folks,

I thought ASAs were generally upgradable - I have an ASA booking from Mel>Lax return in the next couple of weeks, just tried to upgrade the return leg only to find the message that the flight is not upgradable. Qantas website says (in the footnote) "* Flight Upgrade Awards are not available on Classic Awards or on international airfares booked in E, N, O, P, Q or X class, which includes some Qantas Any Seat Awards and some international Red e-Deal fares."

Any tips how I can avoid this happening in future?

thanks
Rebekka

What class is your ASA?

The premium and business ASAs are upgradable.

Economy ones unless booked into a higher fare bucket are not.

Economy - I'm trying to work out how to get it booked into a higher fare bucket in future.

You would need to book the equivalent of a flexi and not a red e-deal level airfare.

The T&C's are specific, only ASA not booked into the following classes may be 'upgradeable' using points: (Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions)
16.1.4 Flight Upgrades are not available when travelling on:
a) Qantas and Partner Classic Awards (both Domestic and International)
b) Qantas International airfares booked in E,N,O,P,Q and X class which includes some Qantas and Jetstar Any Seat Awards and some Red e-Deal fares.
The cheapest economy ASA's (YASA) book into X. The cheapest PE ASA's (WASA) book into Z and the cheapest Business ASA's (JASA) book into U.

So, Z and U are upgradeable as ASA's, X is generally not.

I have only done a couple int YASA's (all booked in X class) and also for SWMBO and they were all upgradeable, the thing is you can't do it online but a simple call fixes that. In the manage your booking area you can click on the fare basis under the Fare Conditions area and there it should state if you can request an upgrade or not.

I've only done JASA - DOM & FASA - Int.....they weren't upgradable either ;)

Reviewing the booking class and T&C's prior to booking - will deliver the answer!

Yeah, often ex SIN to Europe or something like that - hence the term "generally".
