Looking to travel as a party of 4 in April next year on CX Hong Kong - Sydney. It looks like I can easily get 2 J seats readily available. Has anyone had any luck wait listing more then two J seats and getting them? Plan B is to split our party into two.

You can get more than 2 but you will unlikely to get them all confirmed.

It depends on how flexible you are with the dates, if you have CX diamond or gold, and the loading for the flight.

Note CX is not like QF, CX redemption will be wide open (if there are spare seats) for Y, J class closer to the departure date.

I have cx gold. So does that mean the extra two are likely to remain unconfirmed till closer to departure. We are flexible with dates.

Here is what you can do but cost will increase a bit as it involves change fees.
Redeem as many ticket as you can on your prefer travel date (Date A), confirm the remaining seats on another available date (Date B). Then change Date B to Date A on waiting list.

Possible outcome:
1: date change granted, a re-booking fee will be applied. Everyone flies together.
2: flight on date A is full, so no further seat will be released. So you and your family will be flying on separate flights.
3: (optional) request date A to change to Date B, fees will apply but everyone gets to fly on date B.

SYD - HKD has multiple flights a day, so date A and Date B could be different flights on the same day. There are certain flight schedule that is less popular and will give you the biggest chance.

if necessary have a look at other options such as BA SYD-SIN-HKG or QF SYD-BNE-HKG

QF particularly has a lot of open inventory in Asia Miles at present
