Hey there everyone,

just a ramble after doing some flights on Asiana.

I do constant trips from Colombia to Australia, some sort of paid for by "work", but this trip is a quick personal one to be with my eldest daughter for her birthday. So having to pay for it myself, and also enjoying the whole game of zooming around the planet seeing new things at low cost and IN STYLE, I managed to get over flying up through JFK (Avianca) then across to ICN and down to SYD (Asiana), using lifemiles points. All in J.

Actually I was disappointed when the JFK-ICN sector was downgraded from A380 to 777, so lost my chance at an Asiana F experience and had to slum it in J.

But was my first time with Asiana.

I have no time to do trip reports, but anyone who has read any of my other posts would know I fly way too much and it has lost it's appeal - especially when it comes to food. I am so, so, SO sick of the usual offerings - on my usual southern routes on LATAM or QF it seems basically there are about 5 different meals they can provide, which despite having ever more flowery descriptive names, involve the same stuff.

So when just after I boarded OZ221 and the hostess meekly handed me an open menu, I looked down and was instantly sad. More of the same. A fish and vege dish (you know the ones: something like "grilled North Sea cod with sauteed XYZ vege in an ABCDEFG sauce", a meat and vege dish (another long description of ossobucco), and the vegetarian option (make up your own description here for some beans and mushrooms tossed in something). I was so, so disappointed.

But by the time I had boarded, I already had a days travel under my belt, so was a bit slow on the uptake. After surrendering myself to the fact I couldnt face more of this coughte, I accidentally turned the page and discovered that they also had a Korean menu!! (sorry - I was jetlagged - obviously they would!)

So when the young lady came back for my order, I enthusiastically asked for the Korean. She was surprised and said something about it being spicy - I said bring it on!

To cut a long story short, after OZ221 (a 15 hr odyssey due to headwinds), a stopover in ICN Seoul, then OZ601 down to Sydney, I have just completed a 30 hr non-stop frenzy of spicy Korean delights. Probably had nearly a kilo of Kimchi all up. God it was good!

On the last sector, SYD-BNE, I could only just get down a cup of tea :)

Anyway, no real point to this thread. Apart from that I super enjoyed such a change in airline food. It made the 25,000 km trip home actually enjoyable.

But flying back via the south on QF - I wonder what new words they have to describe the same old tired traditional airline meal concepts...........

I often eat the Korean selection especially the Bibimbap. I tell people its a must to have the kim chi on the plane when you head to Korea is its a form of inoculation; being prepared for the early morning "knock you over" garlic smell in the lift and subway.

Just wish they would serve soju to go with the meal.......

Glad to hear it made the trip a bit more enjoyable. Did you decide on an Asian stop over in the end (iirc you were planning on a beach/shopping stop as part of your trip)?

Thought it was going to be a rant about too much kimchi on the menu and prepared to get all defensive but I’m glad to read you enjoyed it :)

I agree most J meals are boring, for some reason most airlines think western ppl can’t handle spice so they serve flavourless food.
On recent TG F flight the CSM was shocked I ate all the spicy appetiser and asked for more that he personally made me a super spicy traditional Thai dish (wasn’t on the menu) and called the FA to see the miracle of a white boy eating the whole thing without braking a sweat!

So yea, if you want interesting meals in J fly on Asian airlines more often or fly F where you will get more customised menus (but not QF F where you will basically get a glorified J meal).

There are a lot of people out there who don't like spicy food and it is not limited to westerners.
On QF mrsdrron sometimes finds the non spicy options extremely limited.

No, that trip is in 2018 - but looking more like Rarotonga than SE asia now :)

The Korean options on OZ are great. Like TomVexille said, even in Y they offer Korean cuisine (including instructions on how it eat it if necessary). It's something I wish more airlines would do. Even on SQ, which have good quality food in Y, it'd be great if they had satay skewers as an option.

Re: lack of spicy food, I'm not too sad since I tend to be a bit of a whimp (although living in China has toughened me up a bit ;)). One reason may be that given the limited number of dishes they can bring on board, they'd look to have those that most people wouldn't object to/lowest common denominator. I suppose with services like SQ's book the cook, they should be able to offer a wider variety.

Rather surprised to meet some Moroccan travellers who couldn't handle the slightest spice or even non-spicy flavouring/herbs ... They did try a few things but the only thing they finished was plain white rice.

When is comes to food, I often wish airlines would stick to simple stuff done well.

Matt

On the positive side of the ledger though, we do know how to do a visual approach. Next time we fly together, I'll send you a crew meal, that should reset your standards.
