AUS-SYD, 2 pax, 15 oct. no set return date

Hi team,

Looking for suggestions for 2 people to get from austin, tx (AUS) to Sydney, flying out on 15 oct (arriving syd 17 oct).

i am QF gold, partner bronze but am unlikely to re-qualify prior to next anniversary year (31 dec).

We both have 90k AA miles, and open life miles, USDM accounts with requisite waiting periods made (both currently at 0, but willing to purchase given both are currently showing 100% bonii)

We will wish to go back to AUS at some point next year, but at different dates (may 20 being likely earliest), but would be happy to wear a change fee.

current thought is to just book a QF Y ticket for around us$2k each return.

id be grateful if anyone can find a J (or F, but I think I'm dreaming there) for <$3k each. Alternatively, should I be crediting to AA and running a gold/platinum challenge given I won't re-qual gold?

Thinking of it purely as a one-way trip:

I'm going there for ACL and flying back on October 14. Booking last year, I decided my best option was to go back via Japan.

AwardNexus is currently showing four J award seats available on JL9 (ORD>NRT) on October 14, arriving at 14:25 on October 15.

Should be good value using AA points (have to call to book), and then quite easy to get from NRT to SYD by October 17.

Just a thought.
