Aussie Ah Bengs descend on Kuala Lumpur

I don't think it was my imagination, but this trip to KL there seemed to be quite a few Aussie Ah bengs wandering the streets. Seems the Berjaya Times Square is very popular with them

Around the BB area it nearly felt like Bali with the number of board shorts wandering the streets.

Got to meet quite a few Bazzas and Shazzas in the elevator going up to my room.

Just can't quite bring myself to slip on the stubbies and singlet top.

I get the feeling since AAX launched the Sydney route they've been able to tap into the "I've been to Bali too" crowd who want a new experience.

I suppose I posted this because I find it worrying that so many Aussies seem to think they're in Oztraylia when on holiday over seas.

Am I wrong to think if you're in a foreign country you try to blend in - at least a bit??

Is it really that much of a problem? Stereotypes exist for a reason, that's why Germans wear socks and sandals, Americans wear "fanny packs" and ask for decaf and Brits complain about spicy food. Every country has its share of tourists who maintain their "style" regardless of where they are. If they aren't hurting anyone what's the problem?

Maybe because thats confortable attire in that tropical heat. You expect them to be kitted out in batik shirts and sarongs?

I was born in KL and when I go back for a visit, i would say I'm in similar attire, so make of that what you will

I have enough on in my life to worry about such trivial concerns......is the reverse of your second point an issue perhaps?

I think that in Muslim countries, how male tourists dress isn't so much of a concern. However, it's how women tourists dress that is of concern.

Malaysia especially in the big cities is not so conservative when compared to Saudi, UAE, Egypt or even Turkey. 40% of the population of Malaysia is not Muslim. In casual situations (mall, cinema, markets) you'll see the local Chinese and Indians in shorts and a t-shirt. Going to a nightclub in KL you'll see the same sort of revealing outfits as what you would see in Singapore. In KL, PJ, JB, KK, Kuching, Penang or Langkawi I would have no hesitation wearing shorts and t-shirt in casual situations.

Of course if visiting a mosque or temple of another religion it would be respectful to dress up a bit.

In smaller cities and on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia things are a bit more conservative.

I would never, ever, wear a singlet in M'sia. Even though I live in them in Australia. It's just disrespectful.

Mr k_sheep loves doing his shopping there though, beautiful light materials perfectly suited to the tropics.
