Are there any Australian-based credit cards that can be used to earn MileagePlus points?

Unfortunately not. The only way to earn United miles with an Australian credit card would be to transfer AMEX/Diners Club points to SPG, then transfer from SPG to United. But SPG->United transfers are 2:1 so the value is not there.

Or transfer from Amex -> SPG -> Marriott -> Mileage Plus. From memory 180,000 Amex MR points converted to 132,000 Mileage Plus miles + a 7 night Category 5 certificate.

Not sure what will happen to these transfers once SPG and Marriott merge in August.

Transferring from Amex to Marriott as per JohnK is the best option. You dont have to get a travel package as still decent earn rate without.

Diners->SPG->Marriott->UA is possible too but earns less. The Diners Dual offers a way of earning with a Mastercard but yield is low

As said all up in the air about whether Amex->SPG/Marriott will last
