I did a search and couldn't find any historical info on this, but I want to know what the scale for cheapest flights to South America has been, and is likely to be in the future. As far as I know Qantas and LAN fly to Santiago, with connecting flights to anywhere else with LAN.

I need to get to Rio cheaply in May next year (2013). Current Qantas sale fares on return are at $1840 from Adelaide.

I know from glancing at airfares before, that they can go as high as $3000 easily, and $2500+ was the norm, so $1800 sounds reasonable to me.

I see there have been sales with LAN in the past for around $1400, but how often do these come up?

Wondering if I should miss this Qantas sale, and wait for another with Qantas or LAN in the next few months, or book now!

Anyone book flights to South American regularly and can share their opinion/tips? Cheers.

$1840 from Adelaide on QF does sound reasonable.

Aerolinas Argentinas were doing a $999 return from SYD a few months ago but that price was probably the lowest sale price ever offered between the 2 continents!

QF, LAN and AR are the only airlines that fly between the 2 continents, all from SYD (some stopover in AKL). I think most people would rate the 3 airlines in that order too.

$1800 is very cheap imo! and id jump on that!

me and my friend booked flight in feb or march i think it was, my friend paid $2880 odd and is kicking herself now shes seen these, thats a 1k saving! im not so annoyed as i used points to book an any seat award.

we are leaving 30th oct returning 19th november.

Booked several flights internally on LAN. Santiago - BA. BA - Sao Paulo & Rio - Santiago. Also one flight on TAM, Sao Paulo - Rio.

EDIT: i should mention our tickets are return from PERTH. I think from sydney was 1500 odd. Adelaide is simialr to perth pricing it seems.

LAN currently have very high load factors ex-AKL so I wouldnt be holding out for much lower if the price and dates suit you. LAN held some sales around the time Qantas started SYD-EZE. The same didnt really happen when QF switched to SCL.

To give context in 2008, we paid ~$2400 for BNE-JFK (QF) open jaw SCL-BNE (LA/QF) and thought we had a bargain (which it was at the time).

AR is the go for the cheapest, but the expression "you get what you paid for" well and truly applies.
