We have a thread running discussing generically purchasing power relativities, in terms of specific examples, what is the experience of others purchasing in Australia and feeling like you have received a good deal.

My example is I purchased a TAG in Syd, got the 10% back at the airport, when the dollar was 0.48, which meant everything OS was too pricey, which markedly diffes to the current situation.

It is becoming a local hot topic as well with the retailers lobby calling for GST to be imposed on imported goods under $1K. They have had plenty of time to adapt to the changing landscape and have done very well. Have imported cars dropped In line with the AUD appreciation? Of course not, they just throw a few extras on them don't they.

Happy to hear others stories of what is good value here? I would add Education for starters

Some of these retailers are using the GST is a smokescreen when the prices have simply been artificially high due to a captive market.

Books are frequently ½ the price or better through sites like Amazon or sussed out though booko.

The same goes for DVD's, however I note that it's harder to get them shipped out to OZ these days.

Definitely not:
- Cars (mostly luxury car tax), but I agree they have not dropped with the fx as they should have
- Luxury goods
- Footwear and clothing
- DVDs / books
- Houses!

Potentially
- Medicare drugs - thanks to subsidies and Aus policy of only paying for improvements
- Fruit and veg / meat
- Services - education / healthcare particularly
- Computer equipment - typically gets priced efficiently (so long as you dont go to HN)

Yes I have noticed less players wanting to ship as well.
