The thing is, there is no standout future Test opener running around in the shield this year, so you have to select from what’s available. Harris has a CA contract for 23/24 so he’s clearly on the radar. Moreso, if there is general agreement that Bancroft is likely, how do you discount Harris when they both offer a FC batting average of just below 40?
Personally I agree that Harris has been found wanting at Test level and shouldn’t be selected again, but when there is no other obvious candidate… sort of like when Shane Watson kept getting picked…
Now, whether Head, or even Labuschagne is selected as a Test opener, is another story. Again, IMHO, that’s not a good idea.
