Yep! Almost get caught out some years waiting to see if there is a Perth trip on the radar. Lucked out this year with one early in my membership (taking off tomorrow) amazing use of the benefit, technically we are meant to fly cheapest fare (Virgin only) but Directors have deemed Perth an exception

Been VA Platinum for 1.5yrs.
Had 2 free upgrades to Business class (including food) from a Saver-lite ticket (Mel->Per)

#1 Show up to check-in counter, ticket printed & handed, walked off. Look at seat - given 3A
#2 Walk into lounge; name called on speaker to approach reception ; given complementary upgrade to business

For both cases, other people also got bumped to Business.

Overselling always likely to produce some sort of result I suspect, though management of this seems to have improved over the years. Nowadays with the 'bid' thing going on for upgrades for pay I'd suggest that these lottery requests will certainly get filled before a status passenger gets a free bump up.

as a recent plat only ever been bumped up once. After boarding the cabin manager directed me to 1A as my allotted seat in row 4 had to be given to someone else. apart from that, no on-board niceties.
