Availability to US?

I would go SYD-KUL on the $499 AirAsia flat bed sale then KUL-HKG-JFK on CX Business for 55k miles :)

But it's 122,500 points USA-TYO-AUS though :(

Not sure of your point, if you were going via QF the equivalent flight would cost 164k for only business and at least this way you are likely to get a seat.

Yeah, its not particularly cheap but it is at least an option.

Its beyond a joke that so few J seats are available on say QF these days to/from USA unless you book near a year out, of course gong through say KUL or HKG is an option or use points to HNL then to mainland from there or the reverse, then J seats are not so hard to find.

My feeling is that I would prefer much wider redemption availability - even at higher cost. I have a family of four. We all love Qantas. I would love to be able to realistically book them to the USA in J. And not exactly 364 days prior to travel. Should better flexibility cost? Sure! But at least make it available as a choice.

They could always introduce different tiers of awards ie more award seats at higher prices like AA do.....

I guess I wasn't taking it the 'compare it against QF" angle but from that angle, AA definitely makes sense.

From the award chart SWP-USA is 72,500 points, and that's the angle I was looking it from, and that's why the 50K premium is a bit rich.

Hard to disagree with the fact that its expensive in comparison to the 72500 points option but from many account the likelihood of actually getting those flights is on a rough par with seeing a unicorn, i.e. its a mythical price. Yeah I know that going a bit far, but its not that far from the truth.

I think fairer access would be preferable to any increase in prices.

While most of us struggle to find a seat in premium cabins to the USA... if you're a platinum or P1 all you need to do is call and off you go. And you also get to snag all the upgrades.

It's not transparent. Perhaps those 'request' seats could be made available to all... but at double the price of standard awards. Would make little difference to Ps and P1s, they'll have the points anyway.

While its not to US, this has just proved very useful for me to go to Japan at Xmas. I've been looking for flights to Japan on Boxing day without much luck. Had found (and booked) SYD - KIX (via SIN) on SQ but was costing just over 130K plus just over $1K in real money one way for 3 people (2 savers, 1 standard) and that's with a 19 hour layover in SIN. And thats for Y!

Have now booked us 3 seats in First Class on JAL, SYD - NRT for 180K plus $249. Seems a much better deal plus gets us there a full day earlier. The only downside was that I now need to get NRT to Kyoto (since I already have accomodation booked and paid) and for some reason AA could not see internal flights available until the 28th. But my daughter tells me internal flights are cheap (at least on Peach or Jetstar) and I'm OK with a LCC on a 1 hour flight, or could use Avios (4500 points plus 1 pound each).

Very happy, possibly not the best use of my points but very good price for a peak period. (Oh and by accident first time I looked I forgot to set for redeem awards, this priced at $18k!!).

paid domestic flights in Japan open up 60 days prior to departure. Before that, there are limited flights (I guess to assist passengers in international connections?). Within in the 60 days the displayed flights double or triple in number.

AA should be able to see them I would have thought as connecting from international flight.

Otherwise another great option is the flat rate fares offered to foreigners by both NH and JL. Generally around 10,000-11,000 yen per sector anywhere in Japan. If you are interested in those let me know and I can get you a link when back on the computer, much better than LCC and should check your bags right through even if on different PNR.

Otherwise the Shinkansen is always good fun to get down south.

I was a bit suprprised AA could not see them as I can see them on BA!. Definitely interested in link.

We will be taking the Shinkasen from Kyoto to go skiing (Nozawa Onsen) and then back to Tokyo. But just as a oneway Tokyo to Kyoto was expensive, seems flight is cheaper.

I booked CTS - NRT - SYD - CBR via AA for the 19th Feb 2016 so they can see domestic JAL flights as well.

Yeah I have no doubt they can see it as the operator could see a flight on the 28th but not on the 26th/27th and on BA there were a number of flights that day (available for awards booking)!
